Our programs based upon courses in business, arts, sciences, and humanities provide you with a solid, well-rounded education to help you achieve your career goals.
The Business Program offers a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with an emphasis in either accounting, public administration, business administration, and economics. Students who wish to continue their education beyond a four-year degree can obtain a Master of Business Administration.
But we offer you more than a degree; we offer you personal attention. Classes are small and the faculty take a personal interest in the students. You won't be just another number!
The faculty in the Business Program have years of experience, both academically and in the business world. Most continue to provide professional service to the community. And unlike many larger universities, graduate students do not teach classes. Our classes are taught by our faculty.
The Business Program sponsors one of the most active student organizations on campus. The Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) Club is an internationally- affiliated group of business and non- business majors whose focus is the development of professional business skills through interaction with community professionals. The SAM Club invites guest speakers to the meetings, it organizes fund raisers, it participates in community affairs, it takes a trip every semester to nearby cities to tour companies and see first hand how they conduct business, and much more.
Southwest Small Business Development Center (SBDC):
The Center is located on the campus of WNMU and provides counseling, educational opportunities and planning assistance to the small business community at large. The University provides facilities to the SBCD as well as in-kink support for its operation. One faculty member is liaison to the center and works with the Center staff to present educational programs. The Department is a collaborative effort present an entrepreneurship course once or twice per year to the public for college credit. Portions of the course are open to the community and instead parties to attend, depending upon the subject material presented. For instance, if an individual wants to learn about marketing, he or she may attend the sections on marketing without enrolling in the entire course. The overall goal of this course is to teach the student to develop a business plan.
Silver City County Economic Development Corporation (SIGRED)
The Small Business Development Center is operated under the umbrella of SIGRED witch is a non-profit organization funded by a membership of over two hundred local businesses with the mission to promote economic development within the Silver City Grant County area. The President of the University is an ex-officio member of the Board while the Vice President for Academic Affairs and a member of the Department are active members of the board. From time to time other members of the faculty and students assist in projects and work with the SIGRED organization. The organization is active in retaining and expanding existing businesses, promoting tourism, and attracting retirees to the area.
Southwest Center for Resources Analysis:
The Southwest Center for Resource Analysis provides regional and planning assistance to local, state, tribal and federal governments as well as the private sector, in the areas of land use and environmental planning specializing in intergovernmental coordination. The Center's basic research is in developing planning models for identifying socioeconomic issues of governmental and resource management. The Center is dedicated to improving the capacity of local governments in environmental and resource management, especially in mixed jurisdictional areas. It continues to be and important segment of the community outreach program of the university, serving New Mexico and other states in the southwest. It also provides research opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
New Mexico Economic Development Course:
The Department of Business, Economics, and Public Administration in contract with the New Mexico Economic Development Department and in cooperation with New Mexico Small Business Development Center and New Mexico Industrial development Executives Association, conducts and annual Economic Development Course accredited by the Americans Economic Development Council. The course if one of the twenty accredited Economic Development courses in the United States conducted at the end of each Spring semester according to a prescribed curriculum. Selected graduate and under-graduates students for the Department are allowed to enroll in the course for college credit. Course participants have the opportunity to network with practicing professionals and volunteers in economic development from all over the nation. Job placement opportunities have evolved for several Western graduates from this course. A member of the Department is the Director, and several members for the Department have attended the course of have taught as members of its faculty. The Director also serves on national educational committees and serves on the editorial staff of the book Practicing Economic Development.
"BUSINESS REPORT" in the Silver City Daily Press:
The Department faculty in cooperation with SIGRED and occasionally the Students are frequent contributors to the Business Report column in the Silver City Daily Press the largest local newspaper. The purpose of the column is to promote discussion of a business education topic using newspaper-writing techniques. A Department member has coordinated the Column for Several years.
Hatfield Fund:
The estate of Charles Hatfield, who is the early 1980's was an adjunct instructor of investments, bequeathed to the Business Department $15,000 to be used by the students for portfolio management. Students in Introductory and Intermediate Finance menage the portfolio as part of their course assignments.
