INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST TO OPEN EXHIBIT
AT WNMU
SILVER CITY, NM – The Francis
McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art at Western New
Mexico University is proud to announce the opening
of its capstone exhibition by internationally acclaimed
artist Santa Barraza.
The opening reception for the artist is scheduled
for Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. Barraza will be signing copies of her book
Santa Barraza, Artist of the Borderlands, on sale
at the event.
An Artist Talk is scheduled by Barraza a day prior
to the opening in the McCray Art Building at 1:00
p.m.
Currently traveling through Europe, Barraza’s
exhibition Mujeres Nobles/Noble Women opened in 2009
at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany.
Aside from traveling exhibits, Barraza is a professor
of drawing and painting at Texas A&M University
in Kingsville, Texas where she chaired the Art Department
from 1998-2004. She has taught for The Art Institute
in Chicago and Pennsylvania State University.
Barraza’s work incorporates memories of her
early upbringing in Texas and interpretations of ancient
Mayan elements. Her artwork is in many permanent collections
across the country including the Smithsonian Institute
in Washington, D.C.
The book Santa Barraza, Artist of the Borderlands
was winner of the 2001 Southwest Book Award and selected
as the “Best of 2001” in Texas nonfiction
by the San Antonio Express-News.
Open to the public, the events are held in conjunction
with WNMU’s Hispanic Heritage Month activities.
Gallery opening-related events include mariachi performances
on September 12, 2009 in the Fine Arts Center Theatre
at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The McCray Gallery is open Monday through Friday from
10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
