The Draft

The Senate and House plan on passing a bill that will draft young people between 18 and 25 including women. I feel the Senate and House of Representatives are wrong. Young people should decide to join the military on their own. Also, if this bill passes what will happen to young people’s education? However, I feel if men will be drafted women should be also. We are all equal. I am a woman and I should not receive any special privileges.

When we graduate from high school, we have many options to choose from: going to a university, going to the work force, or joining the military. I made the decision to attend a two year college. Why should anyone else make the decision for me? If the Senate and House of Representatives pass this bill, then they will decide my future for me. I thought we were free in America? I thought I had the right to choose my future. If I wanted to fight for my country, then I would have joined the military. It is a decision I should make, not my country.

If this bill is to be passed, then what will happen to our education? I think receiving an education is the most important part of life. How long will our education be put on hold if we are drafted? What will happen to the education system with all these young people fighting a war?

I am a 20 year old female and an American. If the draft is to occur, then I want to defend my country just like the men. I think that being a woman does not mean that I cannot fight for my country. Men and women have equal rights. If men have to go, then I think women should also. I want to be there fighting next to my brother, not waiting at home for him. I am 5’3” and weigh 108 pounds, but I think I can fight just as much as my brother can.

I hope that the Senate and House of Representatives think about the consequences before they pass this law. It makes me think, “Are we really free?” The definition of freedom is one at liberty, not bound. Why are we being bound by our government? We are fighting to free others when we are not yet free ourselves.
