Once a Year

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I have loved Christmas ever since I was a child. I remember how excited I would get the first day of December, counting the days away on my advent calendar.

When I was in school, I was always happy to be off for Christmas break; by this time everyone needed a break. Since I would be home, I did a lot of baking. My nana and I would make baskets and fill them up with different types of cookies and fudge and give the goody baskets to family and friends. I also liked decorating the house. I liked decorating the tree the most. I remember getting a little carried away with the icicles on the tree sometimes.

To me, as a child, Christmas was a time for family and presents. I really think I liked Christmas mainly for the presents. I’m one of those people that can’t wait to see what they got for Christmas. So every Christmas, my nana and I would get butter knives and carefully pull the tape off so we could see what we had gotten. We would tape the presents up so no one would know we opened them. One time we opened our big presents before Christmas and we had blank expressions on our faces because we hated our presents. I had gotten a keyboard and she had gotten a vacuum. We were glad we opened them before Christmas because we had enough time to practice making faces like we liked them.

To me, now, Christmas isn’t as commercial as it was for me as a child. I still love all the things I liked about Christmas as a kid but, now I’m making memories for my kids. I want my kids to enjoy Christmas as much as I do. The only thing that has changed now is that I’m an adult is my age. I still feel like a big kid at heart and still like all the perks about Christmas.
