Research & Academic Interests: Mark Twain; American humor and satire; how to make a million dollars with one bad joke
Principal publication: Persona and Humor in Mark Twain's Early Writings (University of Missouri Press, 1995).
Hobbies, personal interests and community involvement: Just about everything, unfortunately, to judge by the 2,169 books (wild estimate) I have backlogged to read, half of which I seem to have bought from Amazon while suffering the delusion that I'd actually have time to read them. Besides the standard choices of literature, history, philosophy, etc., I am interested in astronomy, nature and nature writings, hiking, psychology (forlorn hope of self-healing), music, chess, and just staying alive. Related to that final point, I am also inclined to take depressingly undue interest in financial systems, resource consumption, geopolitics, and climate change and environmental issues, all of which subjects are grimmer than any humorist, even a bad one, should have to contemplate and which are sometimes conducive to nocturnal visits to the Jornada del Muerto desert with an electronic hitchhiking thumb and a hopeful look skyward.
