PREREQUISITE:
Native or near-native proficiency in the
Spanish language or permission of the instructor.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The main objective of this course is to prepare prospective bilingual teachers
of the Prueba which is required for endorsement in the state of New Mexico.
It is also an excellent course for students wishing to improve their overall skills
in the language. Students will work on grammar, comprehension, speaking, reading
and writing and will be expected to use formal academic Spanish during class time.
The course has been designated as a writing intensive (WI)
course; therefore, students must successfully complete a number of writing assignments
in order to pass the course.
COURSE METHODS:
The class will work as a group on grammar, accentuation, comprehension and oral exercises. Most readings, compositions, writing exercises, tape recordings, grammar exercises from the textbook and other assignments will be completed at the student’s own pace. Students will be expected to correct and explain all errors made in the ten required compositions unless they have made only ten or less errors.
GRADING:
The final grade will be based on the average of grades in the following categories:

ATTENDANCE:
Daily attendance is mandatory and although it will not be figured into the final grade for the course, students are expected to attend class regularly. More advanced students may work outside of class on readings, compositions and computerized grammar exercises. The required and recommended textbooks as well as the instructor are to be used as resources for developing the Spanish language. From 11:00 to 11:50 is reserved for working independently on class assignments and the instructor will be available to answer questions at this time and work with students individually.
