Brickellia rusbyi lacks the calyculate bractules of Brickellia grandiflora. Brickellia rusbyi has long, attenutate leaves. The leaves are alternate and coarsely dentate. There are usually less than 20 florets per flowerhead. The achenes are pubescent and the pappus is composed of barbellate bristles. The phyllaries are commonly purplish when mature. Brickellia rusbyi grows on rocky slopes at middle elevation.
