Coreopsis tinctoria is an herb that is somewhat straggly in appearance although the flowers are showy. The flowers have eight rays that are lobed and that typically have a brownish red proximal color marking. The disc is reddish brown. The nearly sessile leaves are pinnatifid with linear segments toward the bottom of the plant and linear and undivided near the top. The achenes are not broadly winged as they are in Coreopsis lanceolata. The pappus is either absent or a pair of minute awns. Coreopsis tinctoria is found at low elevation near water.
