Grimmia pulvinata is dark green and grows on granitic rock. The leaves are lanceolate with hair tips. The leaves have cells that are blocky and papillose. Grimmia pulvinata is one of the most common members of this genus. The seta are cygneous or arcuate. The plump capsules have a mitrate (bishop's cap) calyptra. The cross section of the leaf shows a one stratose lamina with two stratose margins.
