Lindbergia brachyptera (Mitten) Kindberg

Family: Leskeaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Pterogonium brachypterum Mitten
Leskea austinii Sullivant

Lindbergia brachyptera is a distinctive though small moss. It is found under rocks in rigid, loose mats mixed with other mosses. The leaves are crowded on the stems and are slenderly acuminate. The most obvious feature though are the large, tall papillae. There is only one papilla per cell. The middle margin of the leaf appears to have "spikes" because of the tall papillae. Brood branches can commonly be seen in the leaf axils.
