Arctostaphylos pungens is a small to medium sized shrub recognized easily by the beautiful reddish bark on the
larger trunks and branches, as well as the beautiful small pinkish red urn-shaped flowers that droop in clusters from the branches. It is found in middle elevation canyons, roadsides, and even on some mesas.
