Athyrium filix-femina (Linnaeus) Roth ex Mertens var. californicum Butters

Athyrium filix-femina var. californicum is found in very moist forest near creeks. The rhizome and stipe bases have tan to brown, large lanceolate scales. The frond is acute at the apex and gradually tapered at the base. The sori are almost circular and the indusia have marginal hairs longer than the width of the indusia. Athyrium filix-femina var. californicum usually grows as a larger plant, but can also be found much smaller in the Gila National Forest.
