Vascular Plants of the Gila Wilderness

Presented in Association with the
Western New Mexico University Department of Natural Sciences

Valerianaceae
(Valerian Family)

The Valerianaceae have roots with a "dirty sock" smell, apparently a result of the isovaleric acid they contain. In spite of this, some species have large edible roots. They have to be cooked for a long time before they are eaten. The leaves are basal and opposite, and the flowers are usually small, in clusters, and have a small spur.

Valeriana edulis (Edible Valerian)
Valeriana arizonica (Arizona Valerian)
