A Bit of History
"On Thursday, October 20, 1949, by authority of the Board of Regents of the New Mexico State Teachers College, the name of the latter was formally changed to and will henceforth be known as New Mexico Western College.
This action was taken by the members of the board for the reason that the college had outgrown its function solely as a teachers college and now embraces training courses which put it in the general college classification." (Silver City Daily Press)
