Practice Experience :

I came to New Mexico in 2005, to find a university that reminded me - in terms of size - of two of my previous institutions. I stayed to find something remarkably different. Not that I didn't love the students everywhere I've been - students are, after all, why we are here and what lured me back to higher education both times I left to run not-for-profit agencies. No, it was our particular students, with their wonderful mix of backgrounds, geographic locations, and stories.

And now, having been here seven full years, my family and I are so glad we made this decision. My husband works with high school students who are taking college classes, and enjoys what he does, although you can often find him working on our house and garden. We appreciate the weather and the historic beauty that is New Mexico and the adjacent states.  We sometimes travel to Mexico. We have found much to learn in the tribal areas, and the pueblos.

Before that, however, I spent many years putting my MSW to good use working with volunteers in United Way organizations across the southeast, being a school social worker, running a Girl Scout council with 6,000 girls, staffing an American Heart Association, and raising two wonderful kids (who are now grown, although those who have me as an HBSE professor will come to know Nick, my son) with my husband. And did I mention my cat?
