MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK

General Information

The program leading to a Master's Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) builds on a liberal arts foundation and is designed to prepare social workers for leadership roles in developing and providing services to individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations.

The M.S.W. Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and is designed primarily for the rural practitioner. Classes are face to face, online, and in a weekend ITV format in Silver City, Deming, Lordsburg, Truth or Consequences, or Gallup. M.S.W. graduates from CSWE accredited programs are eligible for advanced practice state licensure.

Application is made both to the WNMU Graduate Division and to the Social Work Program. Social Work application materials are available at Forms and Documents (left), and more information can be obtained from Beth Walker, Dean, at 575-538-6323 or Beth.Walker@wnmu.edu. Application to the University's Graduate Division is made through http://www.wnmu.edu/NewStudents/newpages/GradAdmissions.shtml.

Social Work does not give credit for life experience. Additionally, a comprehensive exam is not required for students enrolled in the Master of Social Work program.

M.S.W. Programs

Much of the coursework for the M.S.W. is offered online.  For those courses that are not online, we offer small class sections via desktop web conferencing (much like Skype), and these are offered on nights and weekends.  The field practicums take place in the student's local geographic area (requiring an MSW field instructor), or in the geographic area of one of our campuses (Silver City, Gallup, Truth or Consequences, and Deming, NM).

The M.S.W. is offered through the following options:

  1. Advanced Standing M.S.W. Program
  2. Two-Year M.S.W. Program
  3. Three-year M.S.W. Program
Application Dates
Applications to the M.S.W. Programs at Western New Mexico University are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications for the Fall semester are due the Monday after spring break; for the Spring semester, applications are due the Monday after Thanksgiving.  Students are encouraged to apply to the University significantly earlier.
