CAMPUS POLICE

*Are Campus Police Officers, (real) Police Officers?….

          Campus Police employs certified or certifiable Police Officers.  Our Officers are certified by the State of New Mexico and are able to perform all duties required of a Police Officer.  Our Officers are on duty seven (7) days a week, twenty-four (24) hours a day.  We have jurisdiction over the campus and we work with other local police agencies. Our Officers investigate all incidents and accidents on campus.

*Where is the Campus Police Department?….

          Campus Police is located across the street from Light Hall, north of the Administration Building.

*What are Campus Police phone numbers?….

          Our office number is (575) 538-6231.  If our Officers are unable to answer the phone, you may either leave a message or call (575) 388-8840.  This number is to Central Dispatch.  They will contact the Officer on duty for you.  In an emergency, call (9) 911.

*What other services does our department offer?….

            We provide student IDs’ and parking permits.  Upon request, we also provide escort services.

 

*How do you obtain a Student ID?….

          If you are a full-time student, your ID is free, for the first time.  If your ID is lost or misplaced, there is a $10.00 fee for a new one.  If you are a part-time student, you can pay a small fee at the business office and still receive the benefits of using your Student ID.

*Are parking permits required on Campus?….

          If you will be parking a vehicle on campus, you will be required to obtain a parking permit for that vehicle in order to park anywhere on campus, which includes all parking lots and housing areas.  If you live in the housing areas, you are required to leave your vehicle parked in the area you live in until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There is no charge for the parking permits. Please bring in your vehicle registration for your permit.  Parking Citations will be issued for no permits and illegal parking.

Penalties

Failure to obey the parking and traffic regulations and the general provisions of these regulations shall be punishable by citations that must be paid within five days of the date of issue.  The assessments can range from $20 to $120, depending upon the violation.  Failure to comply with the regulations may subject the driver to the loss of driving or parking privileges on campus and/or the impounding of the vehicle.  All costs, tow charges, storage and fines will be charged to the owner.

Payment of Fines

All fines must be mailed to or paid in person at Western New Mexico University Business Office, within five working days.  The receipt must then be presented to the Campus Police Department to have the ticket cleared.  After five working days, a $5 late fee will be charged per day up to $50, for each violation. For the violation of a handicap zone, the fines are $60 to $120 maximum and for the violation of a fire zone the fine is $80.

Handicapped Parking Permits

Handicapped parking permits, issued by New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division, must be displayed along with a current identification sticker from WNMU on the vehicle, at all times.

*What is the weapon policies on campus?….

The possession or use of any weapon(s) or firearm(s) on campus, except in officer training programs conducted under the auspices of the United States Armed Forces, state or local government law enforcement agencies or by officers thereof, is prohibited.  Any individual who has knowledge that another person has a weapon(s) or firearm(s) on campus has a duty to report the situation to the Campus Police.  The failure to report a violation of weapon(s) or firearms(s) is serious misconduct and is grounds for disciplinary actions.  Such an offense as accessory will be disciplined and subject to the same penalty as the primary offender.

Persons with weapon(s) or firearm(s) must enter campus at the closest point to the Campus Police Department and deposit all prohibited materials at that office for the duration of their stay.
