The Task Force discussed its charge and decided to add three items: to examine the model of advising or the delivery system of advising used at WNMU; to look at the way advisors are selected and rewarded and make recommendations regarding this; and to examine the way changes in policy and course changes are communicated to advisors and suggest ways to improve this.

The Task Force discussed the work from the last PMT on advising. Deb was a member of that group. She will examine her files and share any information that this group can build on.

The Task Force also discussed intrusive advising and its history at Western.

We decided we needed to look at the MBO process and how advising is measured as a part of that process.

Faye will share with the group copies of the handouts she developed for her recent faculty development session on advising to facilitate the discussion of an advising mission statement.

Faye and Chris agreed to compile a group of articles of 50 pages or less and get them to the group for their reading pleasure.

Curtis described a document that he thought the chairs created a while back: a one page document describing what advising was like in each department.

Is there a handbook. Faye will look for a copy of it and see if the one page documents above are included in it.

The group discussed getting copies of mission statements to use as examples. We also discussed the need for better controls or monitoring of the drop add policy and advisor signatures.

We need to examine the forms used for advising. We also need to look at the impact of Banner on advising.

We need to spell out student responsibility for advising and faculty responsibilities for advising.

We need to examine the C&I minutes of pertinent policies and procedures that will impact on advising. June said that the minutes of C&I were assembled and collated through 1997 and should be in the VPAA’s office.

There was a concern with the uniform application of rules such as which courses would transfer from a given institution.

Assignments: Deb Cosper and Curtis Hayes agreed to work on a draft mission statement to bring to the next meeting. Roland Shook and June Decker agreed to work on the needs assessment of faculty and advisors for advisor training.

The group decided it needs to meet every two weeks rather than just once a month. Those meetings would be as follows every 1st and 3rd Monday at 3:30:
