Promotion and Tenure Task Force
Minutes 14 February 2001
2:00 pm Serna Conference Room

Present: Pat Maguire, Pam Kuthe, Chuck Strang, Gwen Cassel, Dennis Hayslett

Absent: Louis Martinez, Roland Shook, Ed Hall

Dr. Shook is in class at this time and the group was unable to find another time that it could meet where he could attend.

The Task Force received updates of the Grid containing expectations and activities for faculty of different ranks that had been brainstormed by faculty applying for promotion and tenure this year. Faye had recast the information into different formats: A page listing all the expectations and activities for Teaching and a page for Advising. She will do separate pages for the other three areas of the MBO categories.

Pat Maguire had also done a draft of a website that contained a timeline in regard to promotion and tenure that would be linked to different documents referenced by the timeline. The task force discussed her the draft and made a number of small suggestions. She will update the draft website as the consideration of the new policy unfolds.

The Task Force next discussed the way in which we would share the draft of this promotion and tenure policy with the faculty. We decided it would go to Faculty Senate for a first reading on March 6 and to General Assembly for a first reading on March 8. Between March 8 and the April General Assembly, the Task Force will hold two open meeting to invite indepth comments and questions. The meetings will be at two different times to enable maximum partipation from faculty. The times discussed were Friday afternoon, Wednesday morning or Thursday during the protected faculty development time.

The group discussed the fact that it had not so much changed the Promotion and Tenure document as separated the MBO piece and the discussion of promotion and tenure and fleshed out the content with examples and explanations.

Chuck agreed to put the content t into final format and give it to Faye. She will ask someone to put the document into Faculty Handbook format ( with numbers and subheading numbers. She will also put on page numbers and line numbers to facilitate discussion of points).

The Task Force will meet again to look at the final document before the March 6 Senate meeting. Chuck will call the meeting together.
