Ed Hall halled@silver.wnmu.edu Dennis Hayslett hayslettd@silver.wnmu.edu Pat Maguire maguirep@cia-g.com Roland Shook ShookR@silver.wnmu.edu The first order of business was to find a new meeting time since a number of participants cannot attend at the current time. Faye will get a copy of the schedule form and send it to everyone asking them to indicate when they can meet. The schedules should be sent to Chuck who will figure out a time and place for the next meeting.
The Task Force read Regent President Darling’s letter directing that the Faculty Handbook promotion and tenure policy be revised and discussed it. We discussed the need for clear guidelines and the fear and lack of trust that surrounds the process. We discussed the need for a faculty review committee which would make recommendations to the VPAA.
We decided that the charge of the task force needed to be expanded in a number of ways.
We need to articulate how the MBO process fits with the promotion and tenure process.
We need to change the expected dates to finish our work since we need ample time for faculty discussion. We will have a first reading of the proposal for a new policy at General Assembly in December.
We need to talk with faculty and find out their concerns; this could be open meetings to discuss concerns with the process of tenure and promotion and with the MBO process.
We need to conduct training sessions for faculty to discuss how to document the quality of the work they have performed for promotion and tenure.
We want to discuss the possibility of a merit pay plan.
Faye will invite Sharman Russell to become a member of the task force.
Chuck will produce a draft of a new policy and send it to committee members before the next meeting so that we can then discuss it. If people have copies of promotion and tenure policies from other institutions, please forward them to Chuck. Faye will obtain a list of AASCU institutions that are similar to Western in size of student body, faculty and staff, and budget and which are rural.
