Staff Senate Meeting

May 4, 2005

  1. Open Meeting
    1. President Hittle called the meeting to order at 10:06 a.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.
    2. Secretary/Treasurer Springer took attendance of senators present.
  2. Approval of the Agenda
  3. Senator Fischer made a motion to approve the agenda with Vice President Biglin seconding. Motion carried.

  4. Approval of Minutes
  5. President Hittle asked that the previous minutes be clarified to read "Business Affairs has awarded the lighting contract for the Old James Stadium football field". Vice President Biglin made a motion to accept the minutes with the clarification with Senator Fischer seconding. Motion carried.

  6. President’s Report
    1. The new AQIP teams need volunteers to serve on the committees. If you would like to volunteer, please contact President Hittle.
    2. The amount for raises will be $643,000. This is the amount that is left over after the mandatory expenses increases (ERB-contributions, health insurance increases, and the 3-5% fund balance minimum). The average salary increase for eligible employees will be approximately 2.5%. Those not eligible for a raise include those who are in a temporary status, permanent employees in probation period, employees with interim contracts, new faculty.
    3. Increases for staff are computed on how far your current salary is from mid-range and years of service. Theses increases are not on stipend contracts.
    4. No staff will be terminated due to funding. The approximate increase is insurance (3%) will be paid for by the university.
    5. The search committees for Directors of Admissions and Academic Support are in the search phase.
    6. Union Update—The next date for meeting with the union officials will be June 14th.
    7. The State Labor Relations Board has granted the WNMU petition for a local labor relations board. WNMU will have to name a representative to that board by mid-May. The local labor relations board is who determines who can be part of the union.
  7. Old Business—
    1. Committee Reports—
      1. Staff Handbook—Fischer—The committee meet on April 25th. The next meeting will be held on May 16th.
      2. Reward and Recognition—Biglin—The Employee of the Month for the month of May is Cynthia Jones from the maintenance department.
      3. The committee met on May 2nd to select the Employee of the Year. That person will be announced at the commencement exercises on May 13th. Senator Fischer reminded the committee to invite the Employee of the Year to graduation.

      4. New Employee Orientation—Baca—The committee has not met, since the Human Resource Director has not provided a list of new staff members.
    2. Union Issues—

    Open Forum Date will be June 14th.

  9. Margaret Soucy reminded those in attendance that the staff compensation plan will be used in determining salaries.

Senator Fischer made a motion to adjourn the meeting with Vice President Biglin seconding.
