Guest: Kathie Gilbert.
Discussion on Handouts:
· Dr. Vowell announced the workshops that Tom Brown will be presenting
October 16-18 and encouraged people to attend. Handouts were passed out.
· Dr. Logan passed out equipment allocations for Chairs.
· Dr. Gilbert discussed the information contained in the Noel-Levitz
and NSSE reports. Dr. Vowell encouraged the Academic Council members to share
the data with people in their units and discuss how they can address the issues
raised. She questioned whether students received this information. She will
ask Kathie Gilbert whether this data can be sorted by major? This item will
be placed on the agenda at a later date for feedback from Academic Council.
· Web Registration--Roland Shook--Dr. Shook announced that web registration
would be implemented for Spring 2003 for all current students on the Silver
City campus. The class schedule will be on the web on October 21. There will
be faculty training through IT for web registration. Additionally, students
will be able to access their own academic information using their Social Security
number and a PIN number. Students may register through the website or through
the Registrar's office. Approximately 98% of our students have an assigned advisor.
Dr. Shook stated that getting out information regarding web registration, etc.
has been difficult because some faculty do not use e-mail.
Faculty were encouraged to post a list of advisees outside their office doors.
To do web registration students must have a PIN and an A-PIN number to register.
Julia Biglin stated that on the website under Personal Development, faculty
may register for training. Faculty will be able to enter grades, check class
rosters, and personal information for students on web registration.
Dr. Shook will send out a list of advisees to professors, and this can be updated
at any time. One of the advantages to students is that they will know they are
registered when they leave their advisor's office.
Dr. Vowell stated that there are still problems with off-campus sites. We will
need to work on how students off of the main campus will be advised. Special
students and non-degree students will need to use the old system.
· Classroom inventory-- Increased enrollment has caused some problems
in regard to classrooms. Issues arose this semester when the number of seats
in a classes was exceeded by the number of students enrolled.. Also in creating
the spring schedule, a problem arose with having enough classrooms in popular
class times. To get a handle on the situation, Mary Billings provided an inventory
of available classrooms on campus. Dr. Vowell asked that Academic Council scrutinize
rooms in their areas that could possibly be used as classrooms. Gwen Cassel
stated that Watts Hall is not included on the inventory. Dr. Vowell asked that
a conversation be held about the possibility of available classroom space in
Watts Hall. Dr. Baldwin stated that the Police Academy classroom space was not
included. Written responses were asked for by Friday, October 18.
· Please note any classroom furniture needs that departments may have
need to be conveyed to Zane Howard so that Student Government could be aware
of departmental needs when they allocate furniture fee money. Students levied
on themselves a furniture of $20 and University is matching what that brings
in. Student Government will decide how to use that student money. If furniture
is needed, speak directly to Student Government President, Zane Howard.
· Class room Assignment Policy--at the request of Faculty Senate--Faculty
Senate is concerned that when chairs assign classrooms, they do so on the basis
of seniority rather than other considerations. Faculty Senate is requesting
that this practice be discontinued. Dr. Vowell will need to draft a response
to Faculty Senate. This will be placed on the agenda at a Chairs Council meeting
for further discussion.
· Dr. Baldwin asked that long MBA classes be assigned to meet in rooms
with more comfortable conditions. Dr. Baldwin asked about using rooms in the
Library such as the Bach Room. Dr. Miller stated that these rooms had been taken
offline for classrooms, but that the Provost could decide whether these should
be replaced on the list of available classrooms. Dr. Vowell asked that Dr. Baldwin
and Dr. Harmon draft a document relating to placing longer classes in more comfortable
classrooms.
· Dr. Miller asked that Bond "C" be considered as people vote
in November since it would benefit Miller Library. The allocation to Grant County
could be around $300,000.
· Gloria Maya announced that on Friday, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. that McGray
would be having an opening.
Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
