Academic Council Minutes

Information was handed out on Carnegie Academy for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Department chairs were asked to share this information with their faculty and request anyone who wishes to participate to fill out an application so they can be nominated for this program.
Questions regarding the budget were addressed to Chris Casey and the questions were:
a) Hiring of grad assistants
b) Institutional work studies
c) Work study for Gallup
d) Funding for equipment needs
e) Funding for new roof for museum
f) Lab fees - if any lab fees are needed, they will be lumped in the 710 line item
g) Allocation for new computers in classrooms. Some computers are old and new technology software can not be installedOther questions were:
a) By Larry French: Deep concern with buildings that need to be secured at night. Some buildings have been broken into in the past. Chris Casey stated she would be meeting with Eloy Gonzales to hopefully remedy some of the problems that are occurring with security.
b) Faye Vowell inquiring about GO bond issues: Per Chris Casey, three projects involved in this bond -
- $325,000 for technology (CIT)
- $1.4 million for Sechler Hall
- $1 million for athletic department including new tennis courts
c) Judith Lawrence asked Chris Casey to define how the $325,000 earmarked for the CIT building would be used. How much for wiring (per Chris in base bid right now), furniture, computers in classroom, etc. Chris Casey noted that an evaluation of computers and furniture would be done. Discussion followed.
Nancy French reported on retention efforts. List is down to 120 students for payments. Rita Horn, Maria Rolfe and Nancy have been calling the students. From Nancy, a big “Thank You” to everyone for returning roosters quickly. Nancy suggested that packets with all information needed for a student to register should be given to students and parents with all forms. Deferred payments might be an answer.
Nancy stated that students not paying by 1:30pm on Friday, September 8 will be disenrolled this weekend. Discussion followed.
Faye Vowell passed a memorandum giving advanced registration numbers for Fall 2000. She gave an explanation of the figures noted on the memorandum. Some council members commented that there may be a need to advertise.
Decision calendars were passed out to the council for the semester by Faye Vowell. Faye Vowell stated that this calendar would be put on the web once corrections have been made.
Julie Miller stated that this semester there were a number of conflicts with rooms in ITV and also double scheduling of classrooms. Faye Vowell asked Judith Lawrence to follow up on this problem Discussion followed.
Larry French commented more time should be given for graduate exams.
By September 14th, Faye Vowell requests that department chairs e-mail her names of faculty that are applying for tenure or promotion for this year.
Also beginning next week, department chairs communicate with her regarding MBO’s.
Sabbatical -letters were sent out to Faculty who had sabbaticals last year asking for their reports.
New Mexico Assessment Testing on November 13, 2000. State sets date.
A request was put in not to have purchase orders and grades due on same date.
Copies of the Academic Affairs Operational Plan 2000-01 were passed out by Faye Vowell. Still need to insert items that surfaced from past Academic meetings.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Pat McIntire - Shortage of nurses in specialty areas. New graduates are being trained right away.
Julie Miller - New online catalogs. Web based. Renovations almost complete.
Cynthia Bettison - Museum opened to public. New items in gift shop. New exhibit called Mexican Book Art from October 1st to October 31st.
Richard Pease - Thanked the faculty for advising for registration. Comp testing will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday beginning at 5:00pm.
Judith Lawrence - Table of account numbers were distributed to department chairs with old account numbers and banner current ones. Both old and new account numbers must be put on contracts for adjuncts and overloads since
payroll will not be on Banner for one more year.
June Decker - Faculty Development. Dr. Vowell will be the first speaker at 3:30pm AV3.
Diversity Task Force celebration scheduled for September 16th. Flyers distributed.
