- The President discussed the Zia Award ceremony in ABQ last week.
WNMU had a large contingent attending including 4 of 5 regents, and a table
of 10 alumni.

In order to prepare for the Baldrige, we will submit an updated Zia application
to the Baldridge process in order to get good feedback. It usually takes 4
to 5 applications to win a Baldrige and often multiple site visits. Our aplication
is basically ready except for adjusting some graphs and making some clarifications.
We will submit it May 27.

Kathie Gilbert brought copies of the application to be a Quality NM examiner.
If you are interested in being an examiner, contact Kathie to get an application.

The graduating senior survey will be going out soon.

Garth Gerstein and Marie Leck helped Kathie put together a great display for
the QNM conference. We will reuse it at the NCA conference.

Our last systems portfolio session will be this Friday.

A standardized PowerPoint format and logo will be created and people will be
asked to use it when they make presentations at conferences. We will also begin
urging people to present locally before they make the presentation at a conference
to get feedback and to provide professional development for our faculty and
staff..

We will create a standard Zia presentation for all people to use if they present
on the Zia award.

Kathie Gilbert will be out of town until 30 March.

HR is doing a land office business because of hiring.

We are in the early stages of building the budget. Salary sheets will go out
to the VPs this week.

The Fiscal Watch report for the CHE has been finished. It is a quarterly report.

The business office would like to acknowledge hard work on the part of people
who do 3rd party billing; it was done much more quickly this year. Thank you.

We will ask to raise tuition 7%.

Tomorrow noon is the deadline for the governor to sign the budget bill.
-
Our budget priorities are to protect fiscal viability, faculty salaries, adjunct
pay increase, summer salary cap increase.

Jerry Harmon distributed copies of the NCATE institutional report to the Cabinet.
It will be placed online for all to read. The 9 examiners have a copy of it
already: 5 from NCATE and 4 from the state.

April 14, Wednesday, the state team will arrive to look at licensure and teaching
fields for which we have provided folios. They will be here from April 14-17
and will interview students, faculty and administration.
- On April 16 (Friday night) and April 17 (Sat morning), the 5 national
people will begin arriving and 4 state people will remain.
- On Sunday students from each program in the SOE will present their
final projects to the team.
- These 9 people on the team will stay until Wednesday. Around noon
there will be an exit interview.
- We are building a documents room physically and online. 75 to 80%
is completed now. Contact Jerry Harmon if you would like to know the username
and password for the electronic documents room.
- The President would like there to be practice sessions with the
players who might be interviewed.
- On March 18 and 19, the chair of the state and national teams will
be here for a pre-visit to finalize the itinerary.
- We are finalizing a 3 million dollar proposal in conjunction with early
childhood program in response to the No Child Left Behind legislation.

There are a number of applicants for the Hall of Fame.

Competition with NMSU in the area of education is increasing.

On Thursday, a draft revision of the MBO process will go to the General Assembly.

The School of Health Sciences and Human Performance will meet tomorrow.

There are 4 applicants for Athletic training position.

Charnelle Escobedo is in the hospital having her baby. It was a boy.

Mary Schad has announced that she is retiring.

The RSA report is due as is the OTA biannual accreditation report

OTAR will host the VSA conference here on April 15-16. The opening will be
at Gallery Urbane on April 15. Deb Nordquist is the coordinator.

The NM OTA conference will be here in October.

Kudos to the ABQ alumni chapter for loyalty. Ten of them attended the Zia
Awards ceremony. They had a chapter meeting on Saturday. They will recruit
for WNMU at the upcoming high school basketball games at the Pit.

An evening to honor the Friends of WNMU in Deming is being planned,
-
Two Extended University program managers went to the regional NACADA conference.
They will share the knowledge they learned with all the EU employees.

A grant writing workshop was attended by the new program manager in Deming.

Velva Hurt, a long time friend of WNMU, recently started a scholarship in
conjunction with a veteran's association. Other organizations in Deming are
actively contributing to scholarships.

A job training grant is being pursued by the Extended University in T or
C

19 people in Deming and 17 in TorC have passed the GED test administered
on site this semester. This service fills a need in those sites.

Gallup is running short of space due to its growth.

CHE has 2.3 million dollars to support nursing in the state. It will be distributed
according to an rfp. Faye Vowell and Gwen Cassel will meet with the Nursing
faculty to discuss an rfp and issues of admission and attrition.

Cabinet discussed a number of space needs and possible solutions. We need
more space and facilities for nursing. We need to reconceptualize the Juan
Chacon renovation to concentrate on more classrooms since Applied Technology
needs more space. The Expressive Arts programs need a new building. We are
discussing asking for federal funding to build a Southwest Regional Institute
for Career and Technical Education. We need to do some extensive renovation
to give us more ITV classrooms.

A small PMT created by Donna Rees and Tony Macias will begin mapping the
process by which courses which will be offered off campus.

Steve Pearce will be available to visit on May 15 with the President to talk
about WNMU’s priorities.

We have over 1200 applications for undergraduates for next year.
-
Student Affairs plans an increase of 5% on food charges and room costs will
increase 3%.

The lawyer has given a positive opinion in regard to getting the Fort Bliss
soldiers recognized as in-state students. Chris Farren will pursue this with
the commandant at Fort Bliss.

Remodeling of the cafeteria and part of Eccles and Muir Heights will be done.

We will target market summer school to teachers recruiting them to finish
a degree in three summers.

Three faculty (George Muncrief, Roland Shook, and Janet Wallet Ortiz) attended
the NACADA regional conference in St. George and presented a session. Roland
Shook also presented in a separate session.

A document imaging PMT has been initiated.

The CAAP degree audit project is ongoing.

Faye Vowell is visiting classes of those people applying for promotion and
tenure. She is also doing the MBOs for department chairs and deans.

Grant writing projects are underway for support for the Playas project with
NSF and with the Department of Energy.

CHE has hired a state director of ABE. She will be a good director with a
20 plus years of experience with ABE.

NM Works will probably be funded for next year. We get $700,000 to $800,000
annually for this program.

Applied Technology had a successful site visit for our Perkins grant.

Tony Macias has hired a new secretary, Cynthia Maynes, who will start work
on March 15. Two career advisors for Western Works will be hired by mid March.

The Expanding Your Horizons program last Saturday was a great success. IT
participated and supported the effort..

April Hansen has taught her first course in AV1, the new training room.

The purchase order is out for wiring Regents Row. This work will be done
over spring break. Only Muir Heights is left to be done. That effort is being
planned.

IT is involved in ongoing activities. Only 20-30 people remain on the old
VAX email server. Spam suppression is being discussed and will be implemented.
We will be able to get about 80% addressed relatively inexpensively.

The CHEKS meeting at the end of the week will be attended by Duane Elms.

IT is investigating wireless broadband communication to Watts and to Deming.

The ITT strategic planning process has identified the top 10 gaps in our
vision and our performance.

The ITT meeting is at 9:00 am on Thursday. Frank Zuniga will discuss a potential
project with us.

Duane Elms and Donna Rees are discussing ITV installations at the three partner
schools in the Gallup McKinley district.

Our next Cabinet meeting will be in two weeks.
