The President gave out copies of the Strategic Plan and asked that Cabinet read it and give suggestions for changes to the President by18 June. Tentatively on 22 June there will be the Strategic Planning session with the Cabinet in Hunter Hall.
The Cabinet is invited to the President's house tomorrow night at 6:00 pm to honor the LFC. Cabinet is also invited to the Buckhorn on Thursday for dinner at 6:00 pm with the LFC.
Alumni in Indiana will meet on 24 June. Chris Farren, Christie Miller and Patsy Madrid will attend.
On June 23, a Las Cruces alumni meeting will take place at the country club.
The Deming recognition ceremony went well.
July is the next date for the Alumni Bulletin. It will focus on encouraging the alumni to contribute to the Endowed Professorship effort. A number of faculty will be profiled in this issue.
October 30 will be the date of Homecoming this year.
The Endowed Professorship committee met yesterday and is planning a fund raiser in conjunction with Homecoming.
Coach Benavidez is retiring.
Capital projects are due June 25 to CHE.
Staff contracts will be out hopefully within the next week.
There is an increasing problem with food and drink in the classrooms which is causing a concern in maintenance. A policy to prohibit food and drink in the classrooms is being considered. Please give your input in regard to this policy to your appropriate vice president.
Bids close on the FACT renovation tomorrow.
ABE for next year will get the same amount of funding as last year. They purchased the PLATO system for use in this program.
A new state director has been hired for the ABE program.
The Works program will receive $680,000 next year; the indirect will be $98,000. Staff changes will need to be made to meet some grant requirements. Tony Macias is reorganizing the program to accommodate these changes.
The Carl Perkins grant was funded at $95,000 this year. The Applied Technology shops will be redone to come up to standard.
The Homecoming theme is Nightmare on College Street with a Halloween emphasis.
Jasmine Fallstitch has started preliminary planning to improve the recycling program has been done.
Student Govenment will do a fund raiser this year in early July.
Student Government will set its legislative agenda this summer.
We will host the Associated Students of New Mexico state meeting in September.
The A+ certification workshop for Library and IT staff took place over the interim. The A+ certification class members will be able to take the certification tests paid for by WNMU.
Leticia Chambers of the CHE staff informed President Counts that concurrent students generate money for us in the formula.
The library circulation position closed on Friday.
Virginia Manzano has submitted her letter of resignation.
On June 14, the Library will be on retreat. Many thanks to Mary Billings who will work the reference desk. In the afternoon, there will be a Customer Service training session which is open to people across the institution. There are still 11 slots available.
In the Library, the compact shelving has been installed. It will be used to house bound periodicals prior to 1959.
The Media Services bridge has been upgraded so we can now serve 12 simultaneous locations. This was done using the balance of the RUS funds.
We are working with Animas and Cliff to bring them on board as part of the Gila Instructional Network.
Ken Cooper has agreed to repaint the University sign in Walmart.
Julie Morales did hometown newspaper press releases for May graduates and students on the honor roll.
KRWG is doing a video project entitled a Day in the Life of Silver City. Two of our students are participating.
Duane Elms has written a grant to the Higher Education Wireless Access consortium and the Wise Co. If we get this grant, it would create a hotspot for the entire campus.
Duane Elms distributed a copy of the Educause Student Guide to Evaluating Information Technology on Campus. WNMU is doing pretty well on a national comparison.
Jerry Harmon has asked the PED to support a workshop for area school administrators in regard to administering the public school three tiered licensure. There would also be a workshop for teachers in regard to the professional portfolio that the new licensure requires that they keep. This workshop will be in July if it is funded.
All the SCT invoices have been resolved.
Duane Elms is looking for a training vendor with ability for any faculty or staff to log into a training library and use it . IT will have something in place to cover MS Office Suite training on line and in place by the start of fall semester. Study classes that April Hanson will hold can provide some structure to support the self paced aspect of training using these materials.
The next CHEKS meeting will be in Las Vegas, NM in mid July. At that time, Duane will offer WNMU as the site for the winter CHEKS meeting.
On May 15, Congressman Pearce met with a number of people from Western. We will pursue his suggestions.
President Counts, Tony Macias, and Donna Rees went on May 17 to visit the International Business incubator in Santa Teresa and the Technical Institute in Monterey which has 110,000 students on 30 campuses in Mexico.
Andy Hernandez will serve on the Deming Chamber of Commerce Executive Board.
The Teach for America administrator in Gallup shared with us that on a recent survey WNMU scored 20 points above the next highest institution in student satisfaction.
Mike Hensley from NM Tech met with Tony Macias and Duane Elms, and Donna Rees to discuss Playas initiative.
Donna Rees, the UNM Continuing Education Director and the Continuing Education director at Highlands met with Len Malry, Executive Deputy Director of Office of Workforce Training and Development (the Governor's workforce development person) to educate him on the workforce activities of the four year schools.. Len Malry is very impressed with the displaced worker coalition that WNMU put together and Dr. Counts led.
Bill Coker, the school superintendent in Deming, has resigned.
Jerry Harmon attended a Special Ed meeting in ABQ with TJ Betenbough and Richard Rodriguez. At that meeting he learned that WNMU is fifth in the nation in the number of Native American students we graduate.
Tomorrow Scott Vincent, the Luna County manager, will be here to meet with Dr. Counts to discuss what the future plans are in Deming. He will bring with him a number of commissioners and members of his Higher Ed committee.
There will be an NMVC meeting soon. Mary Billings will attend for us.
Preliminary summer enrollment shows we are down in head count; we are up in graduate enrollment and down in undergraduate enrollment.
Orientation this Saturday will be for transfer students. We will do the orientation in the GRC for the first time. (The Student Union was not available because of classes scheduled due to PD Martinez renovation. The renovation of the cafeteria also causes a problem with food services in the SMB.) We have an upgraded Parents program with powerpoint slides in both Spanish and English. The Parents Program effort is led by Maria Dominguez. Child care will be provided through the CDC. Advisors will input the student schedules directly in the computer.
We will look at doing a Deming orientation.
Tom Kruscz has resigned; we are searching to replace him. We are also searching for the Director of Academic Support.
The Catalog and viewbook will both be back by the end of the month.
The Academic Support Center has been remodeled. Stop by and look at the changes.
Chris Farren and Peggy Lankford will go to a workshop at Border Mental Health on sexual harassment.
Student Affairs will also address the issue of alcohol abuse on campus next year. They will collaborate with Student Government.
We are short handed in Admissions now. Work Studies from other parts of Student Affairs will be helping out.
Reminder that all requests by the public for information must be in writing and be submitted to the Records Custodian, Carmen Maynes. A policy on the Notice of Right to Inspect Public Records will be available on the Web by early next week.
Dr Penny Schwinger will be on campus in July and will be teaching class.
