Cabinet Minutes
June 14, 2005
Present: Faye Vowell, Donna Rees, Duane Elms, Chris Farren, Randy Jones, Dan Tressler, Marcia Bourdette, Chris Casey, Julie Miller, Christy Miller.
- Faye Vowell welcomed Randy Jones to Cabinet.
- Duane Elms described the highlights of his visit to San Juan College for the CHECS conference especially the community relationship San Juan Community College has with its local community.
- Cabinet discussed enrollment planning and processes for the fall.
- Julie Miller suggested discussion as an institution of the topic of Student Services for summer school students.
- Dan Tressler stated that there will be seven additional scholarships in the fall for nursing, social sciences, school of education, and criminal justice for $1,000 annually. The Foundation has received the rest of the funds for the Bingaman scholarship; one for school of education and one for natural sciences for $750 per semester for a total of $1,500.
- The Foundation is to close the books on scholarships for this year.
- Currently, we have the juried student art exhibit on display through August 26. There are about 40 works of art in the program in McCray Art Gallery. Gloria Maya has done a great job with this program.
- The Foundation is also sponsoring a golf tournament in connection with homecoming on Friday, October 7, 2005 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We already have two hole sponsors and are working on the remaining sixteen holes. Faye Vowell suggested inviting parents of new freshmen to participate in the golf tournament.
- Dan Tressler will be meeting with Julie Miller regarding the Bach Room in the Library.
- Randy Jones is working with Chris Casey very closely and is in the process of finalizing capital projects.
- Randy Jones attended a symposium and workshop regarding capital projects in Las Vegas at Highlands University. It was well-presented, with a good agenda; it began with a presentation on green building design with the resulting impact being less C02 released into the atmosphere. There is a possibility that Gov. Richardson will ask for a 50% reduction in use of carbon-based fu
- Our capital projects are due on June 24.
- Fixed assets are being tagged. Please be cooperative with staff who come around and want to tag equipment.
- We are still working on landscaping on PD-Martinez and working on Harlan Hall renovations and MEChA/Native American Club renovations. Lighting on Old James is in progress. Faye Vowell and Chris Casey met with student representative and faculty advisor of Native American Club, and John Bourdette will be included in all future communications regarding the renovation process of the MEChA/Native American Club building.
- Chris Farren stated that new student orientation was held on Saturday. The after action meeting will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
- We will be pulling Muir Heights off-line for awhile to finish renovations.
- Part of renovations for the cafeteria should start very soon--pull up carpet and put in tile.
- Chris Farren has signed off on most staff contracts for Student Affairs.
- On summer programs, we still need to work on putting in three-year graduate program for Education and advertising and marketing it.
- Chris Farren has finished interviews for the position in Academic Support and the committee should be getting strengths and weaknesses in to him.
- The Admissions position has 17 applicants and the committee has started reviewing applications.
- We expect by the end of the month to have new catalog and view book out and a blueprint for brochures that Student Affairs will fund for next year.
- Jean Springler and Faye Vowell discussed the difference between the Procedures Manual and other documents such as Faculty Handbook and Staff Handbook. We may try to do an index or listing of information categories. Duane Elms will take a look at these things in terms of web page design.
- Chris Farren stated that the PMT for the web page will continue for this fall. The PMT will look at possible revisions for the web page.
- Christy Miller will be going to Indiana along with Chris Farren and Laure Romero. This is an active alumni chapter with attendance between 35 and 45. Al O'Malley will be there.
- Christy Miller is working on the July issue of the Bulletin with homecoming information--October 8. TGIF on Friday in Graham Gym.
- The Alumni directory from Harris Publishing includes an updating of our alumni base.
- The Student Technology Handbook is in progress. A student, Casey Mike, has been hired editor and artist.
- Bringing up Luminus (new version of the portal) is targeted for July 4 weekend.
- Duane Elms and Donna Rees are looking at grants for dealing with technology literacy --part of the grant is of interest to WNMU and will include a course on grant-writing for minorities.
- Wireless trial extent and scope have been identified.
- Duane Elms is also interested in the status of any CHE equivalent projects he will need to write up. We will want to do the telephone switch again.
- Donna Rees stated that in Chicago there is a WCET conference regarding on-line student support. Mary Billings, Peggy Lankford, and Sean Rees are in attendance.
- Several applied to QNM training this July: Andy Hernandez, Clorinda Harrison, Donna Rees, Mary Hittle, Margaret Soucy, Junius Logan, Peggy Lankford, Faye Vowell.
- Socorro does not have a building to renovate for its proposed learning center.
- Clorinda Harrison has reserved Red Rock for next year's graduation in Gallup. Graduation will be moved forward a week.
- Donna Rees is working with Jon Saari on purchasing a car for Gallup with legislative money.
- Donna Rees is looking for another tech support person in Gallup. She gave a thank you to Jason Collet and Sean Rees for assisting in Gallup.
- The Extended University is filling positions in Deming, T or C, and Gallup; the tech support position in Deming is now permanent, Amanda Hervol is now permanent program manager in Deming; Donna Rees is interviewing for program manager in T or C and is still looking for an administrative assistant.
- WNMU will be providing an Associate's Degree for Educational Assistants focusing on special education in Gallup. School districts will be paying tuition for their employees.
- SOE Gallup faculty be doing the first annual Tohali Institute.
- Julie Miller announced that the Library has finished expending the GO bond money funded in 2002. Thanks to Business Office for working with State Library on this process.
- The Library is starting to spend funds from 2004 GO Bond for books. We have been allocated money for materials and material access—we will possibly purchase a new library server.
- The meeting for the 2006 bond is Friday in Albuquerque. School, public, and academic libraries collaborate in getting this bond through the legislature and onto the ballot.
- Julie Miller attended the New Mexico Consortium of Libraries meeting in Taos. The group has voted its legislative agenda for next year. Agenda will be to support 2006 GO bond and also to fund the inflation line in the formula for academic libraries.
- In terms of staffing, Patt Leonard has submitted her resignation for the reference position. Her last day will be June 30 and the Library will host a reception for her. Julie Miller has filled this position temporarily with an acting reference librarian.
- Julie Miller has done strategic planning for media services and library because of a new standard for academic libraries that is based on continuous improvement principles and parallels AQIP accreditation process. This coming year will be a base-line year for applying this standard to Miller Library. Thanks to Kathie Gilbert for facilitating that day for the Library.
- AQIP SoTL Action Team staff members are working on a project to look at the impact of the workstudy experience on learning. They will be surveying student workers this summer.
- Cookie Stolpe has completed research project on the history of Miller Library. Julie Miller anticipates turning this into both a display in the Library and a Powerpoint presentation that we can present to various groups around town or elsewhere and perhaps offer it as a lecture program in the Library in the fall. Faye Vowell suggested offering it to alumni at homecoming.
- Faye Vowell stated that Junius Logan will be going to Harvard for ten days for a management development program. He will be back at the end of the month.
