special education with the new leadership in the state Department of Education.
-
One of President Counts' priorities for this year after the NCATE visit and
the budget is that Western come out on top in the competition with NMSU for
students in Deming. Lots of NMSU alumni live in Deming. We want to maintain
our market share, but NMSU wants to come in and deliver upper division courses.
We deliver a lot of lower division courses which get relatively less money in
the formula. We need to judiciously take upper division courses and degrees
to Deming to build on our strong foundation down there. We might need to put
more resources into online courses to compete head to head with NMSU. But we
have to be sure we don't promise more than we can deliver.
- Dec 15-16, the Legislative
Education Study Committee (LESC) has summoned the deans of education to present

it will be open for 30 days and we hope to be breaking ground in February.
