· Sheri Bayes is being operated on this morning for an aneurysm.
· Julie is gathering material for the August WestWind.
· The Optimist Club will be giving a scholarship to a Western student.
· Julie Morales shared a potential policy change by the Silver City Daily Press paper to charge for announcements in regard to classes.
· The library has hired a hardware technician.
· The layer 3 switch implementaion is going well. Now IT is down to just a few problematic buildings. This installation has gone well. Hopefully by the end of summer this will be completed.
· Staff news from the library: Tim Turner has taken a job at LaPlata--8th grade English. David Kent has taken a job in Washington State as a library faculty member.
· Media Services is awaiting the results of the ITV funding audit by CHE. The results determine funding for the next year. The RSPS proposal for next year is being worked on.
· Miller Library is one of 40 libraries in the country to host the Elizabeth I traveling exhibit in 2004. We should do some outreach since the only other community in the area to receive the exhibit is Scottsdale.
· A new scholarship has been established for OTA students in memory of the son of a student who died. Donations can be made to the Foundation.
· ABE is finishing the end of the year report.
· The Works program is operating under a new organization and it is going well.
· In Applied Technology--37 students are enrolled in a customized program for CNET. They will sit for their first certification within a month.
· Under the Carl Perkins grant, we received $109,000 for this year. This is an increase from last.
· Next year the Office Administration program will work on curriculum to enable students to be certified. The CNET program will also undergo curriculum revision. This fall auto mechanics will start its new curriculum and students will sit for certification.
· Timeline for the School of Education accreditation visit: April 14-16 for the State Visit and April 17-21 for the joint state-NCATE visit.
· The SOE will have a day long retreat the week before school starts.
· On August 22, the state department of education will host a public meeting for the teachers in the part of the state.
· The Professional Standards Commission of the state department of education will meet at the end of the week.
· UNM will be bring alternative secondary and elementary licensure programs to the Gallup area. These will be the only areas of competition.
· NMSU has agreed to take18 credit hours from WNMU into a master's degree in early childhood. The first class started this week.
· WNMU is working with Frank Renz and others to create a seamless articulation with the community colleges for transferring teacher education students. NMLE will host a workshop to discuss this issue.
· The Renaissance Group has asked us to participate in a pre-conference workshop on integration of expert practitioners.
· In the Reading First area, Dr. Betenbough is involved in two initiatives.
· We have a new Assistant Director of Admissions, Laure Romero. Stop down and tell her hello.
· Orientation is this weekend. It will probably be a smaller orientation than last time.
· The letter to be sent to all students who have pre-registered but have not paid the deposit.
· All students who have not pre-registered but are eligible to return will be sent a letter urging them to make an appointment with their advisor to enroll.
· Academic Affairs will be contacting faculty to tell them the line up of fall meetings and the number and name of the advisees who may be contacting them to pre-enroll.
· A letter has been sent to students coming to orientation to alert them to the student success seminar requirement and the availability of learning communities.
· The new viewbook is here.
· The Relay for Life walk will be August 1. The WNMU/Rotary team has 30 participants.
· Our next orientation will be August 2.
· Academic Support is getting a lot of walk ins; to meet the student need, Deb Cosper is working half time; Dennis Miller and Ben Tucker are also working there in July.
· Painting the W will probably take place the Saturday before schools starts.
· On Friday, we will interview another candidate for the VPSA position.
· Volleyball camp will be here beginning the week of August 7.
· The CAAP program implementation is continuing.
· All AZ four year schools have capped enrollment and have increased tuition $1000 per semester. This is a great recruiting opportunity for Western.
· It is very important to have a good enrollment this fall since we will begin to lose the displaced miners as their WIA money runs out.
· Henry is in charge in maintenance; Mike Maartinez is with his mother who is ill.
· The roofers are on campus for FACT and Chino.
· To the August CHE meeting, we will be taking three capital requests: relocate the student built structure behind Juan Chacon and accept it as classroom space, an expansion of the Fox Building, and the renovation of PD-Martinez building.
· The new men's basketball coach is on campus,
· Two a days for football will start in August.
· Chris Casey attended a business officers meeting last week in regard to issues with formula and proposals for adjustments have been made.
· The auditors are here on campus. They are working on financial aid and internal control procedures. The auditors are new to us this year and are doing a lot of interviews.
· The NM Quality report is due Aug 4. All the first drafts are done and the writers will be given editing assignments today. If you get an email from Kathie Gilbert this month, please respond as quickly as possible if it relates to the QNM report.
· Any one who is interested in QNM examiner training should talk with Kathie Gilbert. She highly recommends it.
· The AQIP effort will again receive priority after August 4.
· We have an opportunity to send to someone who is interested to 2 days of facilitation training this Thursday and Friday at TVI.
· The ABQ Alumni chapter is working on a scholarship.
· The Gallup Alumni Chapter will meet in September.
· The Alumni Garden is under construction.
· Chris Farren's role is being expanded to do more work with community relations.
· On June 29, the county sponsored an open house for the Mimbres Learning Center expansion. About 300 attended.
· Two positions are being filled in Deming.
· In conjunction with the BIA grant in Gallup, 40 students are taking special ed courses this summer.
· In a recent conference call, Katherine Woodard, Fred Wey, Clorinda Harrison, and Donna Rees started a formal marketing process for social work degree completion program in Gallup.
· Swimming lessons has served 258 this summer.
· There will be a Coalition meeting tomorrow in the GRC.
· August 7 is the date for a retreat for the Cabinet.
· August 8 is the date of the Board Meeting. Items will include approval RPSP projects and two capital requests.
· The next cabinet meeting will be August 5.
