Cabinet Minutes 9 June 2003

Present: Christy Miller, Tony Macias, Chris Casey, Kathie Gilbert, Donna Rees, Chris Farren, John Counts

There will be another Cabinet meeting next Tuesday. The topic will be measurement.
· There will be a CHE meeting at the end of the week.
· We will ask our Regents to approve our capital projects tomorrow.
· The RSPS project information is available. The VPs have sent out the forms to those who submitted projects last year. If you are interested in submitting, get the forms from your VP.
· New IT proposal s will not be solicited this year.
· We are still working on the roofs for the FACT and Chino. Hopefully the subcontractor problem is resolved.
· As a result of the NM Town Hall meetings, a Center for Leadership has been proposed. Linda Kay Jones has volunteered WNMU to be the location for this center. It would address leadership at all different levels: K-12, college, and adults. This focus would tie into economic development and into the AASCU American Democracy Project for Civic Engagement. Faye Vowell will share more information in regard to the civic engagement project in the next several weeks.
· The enrollment for summer shows that at this time we are down in Silver City and up in Deming, Gallup, and T or C. Academic Council will need to discuss what upper division classes are needed to serve students since there are some indications that more are needed.
· Betsy Shook will continue to work part time on the degree audit implementation and she will take on some aspects of the CHE reporting.
· June 28 will be the next orientation. We are hoping for 55 or 60. It will start at 9:00 am instead of 10:00.
· We may need to do another advisor training session.
· An offer has been made in the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs position. The candidate will let Dr. Farren know if she accepts the position.
· The viewbook should be here next week.
· CHE has asked to delay the enrollment audit a year.
· We have signed the food contract for next year. We are insisting on a manager in addition to a chef.
· We are interviewing for the special needs position.
· This summer we will interview for the Assistant Director of Admissions and the Heath Center Director positions.
· A number of renovation projects are going on in the residence halls.
· Graduate recruiting is yielding some great results. We have a backlog of applicants.
· Wire One will be installing the new ITV equipment at the end of next week in Silver City, Deming and T or C. We can also put a polycom in Watts Hall also.
· We have purchased 3 Interactive Boards (a Smart Board like product) that will integrate with Web CT and with the Mobile Media Classroom efforts to make our distributed learning efforts more efficient. We have also purchased a tablet that will integrate with the interactive boards. There will be a great impact on teaching such subjects as Accounting and Math where people use the board a lot. Donna Rees will ask Rick Johnson if we can demo this equipment at the Faculty Fall Retreat.
· Mary Billings and Gail Gruber are working together to determine what classes we offer that are totally web and those that are web enhanced. Our classes will be listed on the NM Virtual College website.
· Gallup faculty and students are presenting at a conference for the Center for Excellence in Teaching on their action research.
· Orientation for 40 new Teach for America recruits will take place soon. We hope to get 20 of them as Gallup students. We are expecting 8 to 10 new Peace Corps fellows.
· Next week, Donna Rees will attend a WIA retreat in Las Cruces.
· We have currently 400-500 students receiving WIA support.
· The next Coalition meeting will be on June 25.
· The TAA benefits were denied for the Stream people.
· Kathie Gilbert has been working on the North Central Report. She will be leaving tomorrow and will be back June 23.
· The Noel Levitz survey information is back.
· Tony Macias met with Jose Maestas to customize a 6 month computer program that will give students the ability to sit for 12 certifications. This program will start in late June. We are asking that DOL pay for tuition, instructors, equipment (40 computers) There will be two sessions of 20 students each.
· News about the ABE grant is waiting for CHE to come back with funding figures.
· The Works Program had an increase of $200,000. Tony will be hiring 7 new positions: career advisors with BA/BS degrees, a screener housed in Income Support Division, and two MSWs. There will be an increase in overhead dollars for this grant.
· AT is running out of space. The construction program house could be used as classroom space. We are working to overcome the hurdles to accomplish this.
· Christy Miller will be putting her energies into local chapter meetings in Deming, Las Cruces, El Paso, Tucson, T or C and Gallup this summer. Dr. Farren and/or Dr Counts will attend.
· Christy Miller will be approaching local businesses to see if they will provide alumni perks.
· The next alumni bulletin will be out in July/August.
· Homecoming will be on October 4 this year.
· We are preparing a Baldridge assessment again this year. President Counts urged the Cabinet to reflect on the measurements of progress in their areas.
