· Thanks to the GO Bond passing, we will move ahead on a number of projects. Faye Vowell will convene the faculty in PD and Martinez for a brainstorming meeting. Chris Casey will also be there.
· We have around 25 applicants for the registrar position.
· The Coalition continues to meet. Probably 19 employees are left at PD who will be laid off in January. Tyrone will be drawn down by attrition.
· We have 200 student applications for spring. There is a rush from Arizona due to budget problems. People are encouraged to donate to the Foundation for this purpose since we can attract some well qualified students for the competitive scholarships. Each $200 given will qualify a good student for t
he competitive scholarship.
· The degree audit system is being implemented. We have a full time temporary person working on this process paid for by the FIPSE grant.
· The bugs are being worked out on the web registration process.
· The NM ACT Council is meeting next week. Chris Farren is our representative.
· The women's basketball fundraiser at the Elks club last week was a great success.
· There is a regional meeting of the AQIP coordinators in ABQ next week.
· Kathie Gilbert is working pivot tables for the employee survey with Lloyd Cowling.
· The memorial service for the CCC workers last week was successful.
· Nursing dismissed a student last week.
· Nursing, OT and Rehab, and Pre University programs chairs/deans will get together soon to discuss space in Watts Hall.
· Movement Sciences is offering a limited number of activity courses in the spring. Gwen Cassel is working with June Decker on t
his.
· Social Work is working on advising concerns.
· OT took all 13 people in the second year class to a conference a week ago in Las Cruces. The state conference will be in Silver City in 2004. Midterm evaluations were done for the first time this year. Some good changes were made to help student learning.
· Second year Rehab students went to a conference recently in Las Cruces. Gwen Cassel presented at this conference and was asked to present at two more.
· Three visiting professors presented in classes as a part of homecoming activities.
· SOE is working diligently on standardizing its degree plans. We are delaying the catalog until the degree plans are correct and other problems are addressed.
· Donna Rees, Mary Billings and SOE faculty met with Lordsburg people in regard to educational assistance degree. Ann Chrestman is our point person
· Professional Standards Commission meets on Thursday and Friday. Three items
on the agenda concern WNMU: elementary, secondary and special ed alternative degree plan; curriculum changes; and reading.
· The Bootheel Lab is moving to the Martinez Building this week.
· The Title II report has been submitted. We show 100% pass rate on the NMTA.
· The Annual NCATE and AACTE report is being finalized.
· Staff Senate has a full complement of 15 Senators. Chairs are in place for all the committees. Staff Senate is looking a problem in regard to sick leave for grant employees. Joy Lemme is the Staff Employee of the month.
· Institutional Research is working on a graduation rate report.
· A Portal consultant is on site. Content for the portal continues to be a concern.
· Academic computing is receiving the Dell computers ordered by Academic Affairs. As they are received, they are being built to department specifications.
· Spring registration reports are available on the shared drive.
· La
yer 3 network progress is on going.
· Peer leaders are being trained to train students on web registration.
· There will be a meeting at NM Tech to discuss linking existing videoconferencing networks to create a statewide network.
· There will be an ITT meeting next week on campus.
· ABE is fighting for space in TorC in Deming.
· Western Works will be audited in the near future.
· A ceremony for recipients of certificates in the electrical course was held last week. These students will go on into internships.
· A two year program for electrical has been developed and is currently at C &I.
· C&I has also passed a revision of the BAS in Career and Technical Education.
· The HACU presentation by Dr. Richard Rodriguez, Tony Macias, Janet Wallet Ortiz, Maria Dominguez Rolfe and Julia Biglin was well received. They were urged to make this presentation on campus.
· Tony Macias would like to set u
p a HACU professional development program to acquaint the campus with HACU. Western needs to be more actively involved in HACU activities.
· 500 students under TAA and WIA are attending Western.
· The Upward Bound grant is due Dec 13. It will be submitted through appropriate channels.
· An American Fidelity representative is on campus. Be sure to make a appointment.
· Posting of summer lab fees will be this week. Notifications will go to the affected departments.
· CHE will meet this week. It looks like they will recommend the new formula which has been slightly revised. It also looks like they will recommend 4% compensation. The CDC, ITV and Nursing will be folded into the budget. The new formula will generate $4 million more in cost to the state overall. There will be an increase to our base using this new formula.
· All the Expressive Arts HVAC units will be finished soon.
· DOL is making some changes in the way they
are administering aid for students; this change will have a major impact on displaced miners. We will schedule a separate orientation for these students to tell them and help them make the necessary arrangements.
· Faculty Senate presidents will meet in Socorro on Saturday. The top two priorities are full formula funding and compensation. The third priority is to increase the size of the Board of Regents to include a faculty regent. Is there some way for administrators to lobby to raise the cap on what universities pay on insurance premiums?
· A Western Cooperative meeting in Denver was attended by Larry Rutger and Andy Hernandez,
· Web CT training on campus today for Extended University people.
· An RUS videoconference was held last Friday. Professional development and General Education were discussed.
· Mary Billings will go to Magdaleno to administer Asset tests. She is willing to go to Lordsburg to also administer tests.
·
The Cabinet applauded Christie Miller and all those who helped to make Homecoming a great success. A total of 165 alumni registered for the events.
· Al and Juanita Franks, our Homecoming parade marshals, will be featured in an article in the ABQ Journal.
· The University Club is meeting this Saturday at 5:30 in the Buffalo Bar. Dr. and Mrs. Counts will be honored at this event.
· Dec 2 there will be a meeting of ABQ alumni. A Jan 23 hospitality room is planned before the UNM game.
· The Alumni Bulletin will go out in Jan or Feb featuring the Great Race and winter commencement among other things.
· The ribbon cuttings for fall semester all went well. Thanks to all who helped.
· December 6 is the Christmas party. Cabinet will donate gifts as is its usual custom.
· Staff Senate recognition ceremony is being planned for Nov 18 in the morning.
· People who attended the HACU meeting will set up a booth in front of Mul
ticultural Affairs office to distribute stuff from the meeting.
· On Friday, Dec 13 at 1:30 pm there will be a Board of Regents meeting.
· Carmen Maynes is working on two retirement contracts: Larry French and Bob Rapp.
· Carmen Maynes is working on orienting search committees for searches that are underway.
· Our annual audit outbrief will take place this afternoon around 1:00 pm. This was an exceptionally tough team.
