Minutes from the General Education
Requirements Committee
November 15, 2000
The GER Committee met in the Blanchard Conference Room at 3:15, November 15, 2000. Members in attendance were Nick Cucuzzo, June Decker, Theresa Lugo, Ruth Galaz, Sharman Russell, Brian Saunders, John Little, and student representative Mario Castillo.
Mary Baumhover, representing the writing across the curriculum forum, started the meeting by requesting that 9-12 hours of writing intensive classes be included in the Gen. Ed. requirements. After discussion, a motion was made by Dr. Saunders (and seconded by Dr. Decker), to designate 4 classes in the GER as writing intensive, 1 of which would be Literature.
A discussion about the general framework of the GER ensued and consensus was reached on the following:
Hours Oral Communication 3 Written Communication 6 Expressive Arts 3 Wellness 3 Social Science 3 Math Literacy 3 Computer Literacy 3 Literature 3 Lab. Science 4 History 3 Electives in GenEd 9 Total43 A discussion (ongoing and continued from prior meetings) followed on the goals and objectives which should underlie the content of the GER and committee members were charged (again) with coming to the next meeting on January 17, 2001 with additional ideas for goals and objectives.
The meeting adjourned at 4:15.
ADDENDUM
John Little, committee Chairperson, presented a committee report to the General Assembly on Nov. 16. Concerns were voiced about the lack of faculty input to date and the reduction in the Math requirement to 3 hours. Dr. Little explained the committee's strategy of first developing a plan and then getting feedback from the faculty. This approach was determined in the first meeting and was intended to streamline the process in light of the fact that it took 3 years to create the monstrosity (my words) we have at present. In the interim, departmental input is occurring (or not) through the committee members.
