Western New Mexico University Museum will host the 13th Mogollon Archaeology Conference September 30 through October 2, 2004 in Silver City, New Mexico on the campus of Western New Mexico University. This year’s conference will honor Dr. Harry J. Shafer, Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University for his contributions to Mimbres archaeology.

The conference kicks off with an opening reception and registration at Western New Mexico University Museum on Thursday, September 29. Papers on current research in the Mogollon area will be presented, Friday, October 1, and Saturday, October 2, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Paper presentations will be held in the state of the art Besse Forward Global Resource Center auditorium on the WNMU campus.

On Friday morning, during the conference, there will be a special symposium honoring Harry J. Shafer with presentations on various aspects of Mogollon archaeology by Cynthia Bettison, Darrell Creel, Brian Shaffer, George Michaels, JJ Brody, Steve Lekson, and Karl Laumbach. A Mexican buffet dinner honoring Shafer will be held on the main floor of Western New Mexico University Museum on Friday, October 1, 2004 at 6:30 pm. There will be a good-natured roast of Shafer, with photographs shown of him throughout his career, beginning back in 1971! The cost of the dinner will be $20 per person. Reservations and payment must be made no later than Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 2004 for the dinner.

Saturday evening, beginning at 7:00 pm, Shafer will present a FREE public lecture on The Functions of Mimbres Pottery and sign copies of his book Mimbres Archaeology at the NAN Ranch Ruin. The lecture and book signing will take place in the Global Resource Center Auditorium. Shafer’s book will be available for purchase at the lecture.

The registration fee for the conference is $40.00. You may also register during the opening reception on Thursday, September 30, or at the Global Resource Center (GRC) on Friday, October 1 between 7:30 and 10:00 A.M.

The conference hotel and co-sponsor of the 13th Mogollon Archaeology Conference is the newly renovated Holiday Inn Express, owned and operated by Lanny and Jill Olson. Conference rate, for single or double rooms, is $59.95 plus tax per night, which includes a continental breakfast. Reservations must be made by August 30, 2004 directly with the Holiday Inn Express in Silver City, 505-538-2525.
