SILVER CITY—The Western New
Mexico University Multicultural Affairs/ Student Activities Department, Brewer
Hills Baptist Church and Sodexho will be sponsoring events throughout the month
of February in honor of Black History Month.
On Tuesday, Feb. 14, there
will be celebration of the evolution of music and the influence of African
American musicians from the past to the present. It will be held on the first
floor of the Thomas B. McDonald Student Memorial Building from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m.
On Feb. 15, there will be a Soul Food Lunch served by Sodexho Food Services which will include Momma’s Fried Catfish, fried cabbage with bacon, crab rice pilaf, green bean casserole, biscuits, sweet potato pie, Cajun beans, rice, sweet cornbread, and pecan pie. This event is located in the Mustang Dining Hall from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For individuals not on the meal plan, the charge for the meal is $5.68 per person. The public is invited to participate.
Another exciting event is the Soul Train Dance located at Graham Gym on Friday, Feb. 17, from 9 p.m. to midnight. There will be contests for attire and dancing throughout the evening.
The Second Annual Gospel Music Extravaganza is planned on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Besse-Forward Global Resource Center Auditorium. The event will feature performances by the Saint Luke Baptist Association Drill Team, Brotherhood Gospel Chorus, Mary Grimes, Rev. Richard Ballou, Timothy Mathieu, and Silver City Native Rachel Ross. The concert will also feature David Milner’s Quartet.
To end Black History Month, the MASA Office will host a Soul Food Cook-Off Contest. The categories for the contest include: cornbread, BBQ, and fried catfish or chicken. The food must be submitted to the MASA Office no later than 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The judging will begin at 11 a.m.
