            SILVER CITY—Western New Mexico University is offering the “History of New Mexico, HIST 300” beginning March 7 through May 2.  The course will be taught by History Professor Jolane Culhane and will be offered for three upper division credits or may be audited. The class will focus on learning about the fascinating state of New Mexico from prehistory to the present.

This course will be taught in a special format so that students can complete the course in eight weeks. The course will include eight Tuesday evening meetings along with two Saturday field trips.  Students may take the course for academic credit or they may audit the course.  Audit students need not take exams or complete written assignments but are welcome to do so if they desire.  The class is offered as a three-credit course but if students want only one or two hours of credit, it may be possible to register for special segments by arrangement with Professor Culhane. Those individuals interested in the class should register soon as space is limited.

         Senior citizens, 65 years or older who are New Mexico residents, may take the course for $5 per credit hour.  A registration fee of $20 and a technology fee of $22.50 will also be assessed.

Class topics include the importance of land and water, Spanish exploration and settlement, the Pueblo Revolt, 18th Century New Mexico, the Mexican Period, the Santa Fe Trail, American Conquest, the Civil War in New Mexico, the Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid, the Navajos and the Apaches, Statehood, the Great Depression and New Mexico, WWII and New Mexico, and the Atomic Age and New Mexico.

Scheduled field trips include visits to Fort Bowie, Ariz.; Amerind Foundation, Chiricahua Mountains, New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, and Fort Seldon, N.M.
