SILVER CITY—Many activities are planned for alumni as part of the Western New Mexico University 39th Annual Great Race. The race, a campus tradition, is set to begin at noon on Sunday, April 23, in front of the Juan Chacon Building. This year’s Great Race theme is “Mardi Gras.”
“We would love to have more alumni teams sign up for the Great Race and softball games,” WNMU Alumni Director Christy Miller. “The community is encouraged to join us for all of the Great Race events. If you are not interested in participating in the race, come to campus to support the students by cheering on your favorite team.”
Alumni events begin on Thursday, April 20, with the Great Race “Party on Bourbon” alumni/student talent show set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center Theatre. Alumni, staff and faculty of WNMU, along with community members will compete in “Dancing with the Stars” at the talent show. The public is invited to view the talent show. There will be no admission fee.
On Friday, April 21, registration for alumni events will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hunter Hall Conference Room. The registration fee of $20 includes admittance to all events and a special Great Race 2006 cap. A “TGIF” at the home of President and Mrs. John Counts will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, April 22, alumni will meet at the Mustang Softball Field to play a few games of softball. The winner of the alumni games will take on Western’s football team. If you are interested in playing or would like to form a team, contact Miller at 538-6675.
Also on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m., a tailgate party sponsored by the Grant County Alumni Chapter will be held at the Alumni Garden located at Hunter Hall.
The weekend for alumni culminates with their own special alumni/VIP race following the high school team’s race at approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday. Teams from the Grant County alumni chapter and Albuquerque alumni chapter will compete. The alumni teams, just like the university and high school teams, will also have to go through the water hole located on 11th Street between the Centennial Hall dormitory and the Child Development Center. The finish line is located at Old James Stadium.
Roads adjacent to the university will be closed for the race from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To register for alumni Great Race activities, contact Alumni Director Christy Miller at 538-6675. For additional Great Race information, contact Multicultural Affairs/Student Activities Director Maria Dominguez at 538-6611.
