SILVER CITY--Western New Mexico University is offering a “Geology Workshop for Teachers” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 10 through July 21. The workshop will focus on paleontology.
Students will learn how fossils form, identification of common local fossil groups, and the uses of fossils. Dr. Mary E. Dowse, instructor for the course, says, “The emphasis of this course will be learning about the principles of paleontology while modeling alternative pedagogic techniques. The class will be collaborative and inquiry and problem-based. The class will visit local sites to collect fossils for the teacher’s own collections and the material collected will be used for problems in class.”
The course is offered for either undergraduate (GEOL 480 ~ CRN: 3218) for those who do not have a bachelor’s degree or graduate credit (GEOL 580 ~ CRN: 3219) for currently practicing teachers. Teachers who have previously participated in the workshop can repeat the “Geology Workshop for Teachers” for credit.
