IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  7-11-06  CONTACT:  WNMU MUSEUM

SILVER CITY--The start date of the Western New Mexico University Museum Revitalizing History Project is but one week away.  The WNMU Museum will close for renovation, and research access to collections will not be available, beginning July 17, 2006 through January 2007.

During the renovation, Museum staff will be working in the museum on a number of projects. Beginning July 24, to accommodate the contractor, all WNMU Museum professional staff will work from 7 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. four days per week—Monday through Thursday—for the duration of the construction project.

Security measures will be in full force during the WNMU Museum’s closure.  Entry to the museum is available only to WNMU Museum staff and student workers, WNMU Maintenance employees assigned to the museum, and contractors and representatives of Lynco Electric, Redford Associates, and Champlin Engineering.

WNMU Museum staff will not be regularly responding to e-mails or answering phones during the project due to the possibility of intermittent or continuous electrical shutdown, and the need to move the contents of rooms and exhibition cases out of the way of the contractors.  Messages can be left at the main office line (575) 538-6386, which has been re-routed to an electrical room in the Museum.

During the five-month closure, portions of WNMU Museum’s collections will be on display at WNMU’s Miller Library and the Silver City Museum.  Miller Library will have stone, shell, and wood artifacts from WNMU Museum’s famous Eisele Collection on display along with historic photos of the WNMU campus and libraries.  The Silver City Museum exhibition “The Mimbres Legacy: Two Museums Connect through the Past” will feature prehistoric pottery and artifacts from both the WNMU Museum—Eisele and Hoffman Collections—and the Silver City Museum.  The opening reception will be held on July 29, 2006 at the Silver City Museum. For more information about the “Connecting through the Past” exhibition and opening, contact the Silver City Museum at 505-538-5921.
