Grant County Geology

SILVER CITY--Learn more about local geology with a one credit hour workshop on Grant County geology at Western New Mexico University this fall.  The workshop will be a series of field trips to local geologic sites.  Participants will learn basic geology as they learn to interpret and understand the rocks around the county.

The course has no prerequisites and participants do not need any background in geology.  Mary E. Dowse, Professor of Geology says, “We are offering this course in response to a request from students in the geology of New Mexico class who wanted to spend more time in the field and see more of the local geology.  The workshop will be informal and previous knowledge of geology is not necessary.”

Participants are welcome to audit the workshop or take it for a grade.

The one credit course will meet every other Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Aug. 25 until Oct. 13.   Additional sessions will be Sept. 15 and 29 and Oct. 13.  Transportation will be provided by university van.  Participants must be prepared to walk short distances, up to half a mile, over rough ground in the course.

For more information about the class, contact Professor Dowse in the Department of Natural Sciences at 538-6352 or dowsem@wnmu.edu.  For information about registering for the class (GEOL 380 WKSP: Grant County Geology) contact the Registrar’s office at WNMU.
