            SILVER CITY – The “Rio Pan” steel band drum entertained an audience of 80 community members and students on Sept. 10 at the WNMU Expressive Arts Department “Courtyard Amphitheater.”  The performance was the second concert of the 2006 Fall Music Concert Series.

            The group of eight played music described as “island favorites” including three Beach Boy numbers.    

            Band Director Jim Carey said that the “Rio Pan” band was birthed last February and since then they have been one of many musical groups at WNMU.  Other groups include the WNMU Percussion Ensemble, the WNMU String Ensemble, and the WNMU Jazz Ensemble.  

            There are a total of eight free concerts during this semester’s schedule with the next being held on Sunday, Sept. 17, where the WNMU Flute Choir is slated to perform. Concluding the Sunday concerts for the month of September will be the WNMU Percussion Ensemble performing on Sept. 24.

            Free concerts scheduled in October include the WNMU String Ensemble on Oct. 1, “Rio Pan,” performing on Oct. 8, the WNMU Jazz Ensemble on Oct. 15 and concluding with the WNMU Faculty Recital on Oct. 22.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the “Courtyard Amphitheater,” with the exception of the Oct. 22 Faculty Recital, which begins at 2 p.m. and will be held at the Parotti Recital Hall.

 Sponsorships are available by contacting the director of bands. Donations are appreciated and will benefit the WNMU Music Department through funding scholarships, the purchase of instruments and sponsoring guest artists.
