SILVER CITY--Western New Mexico University is offering a special workshop by Goldie Garcia, renowned bottle cap artist, in conjunction with this year’s Dia De Los Muertos activities.
The workshop will provide students a unique opportunity to learn a popular craft taught by the premier artist in her field as well as exhibit their work. The class is designed to produce the exhibit for this year’s Dia De Los Muertos to be celebrated on Nov. 2.
Ms. Garcia, the guest instructor for the workshop, is a well-known artist who earned a degree from Harvard University. She has taught stand-up comedy at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Garcia’s work is collected by celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Al Pacino, and Billy Bob Thornton.
The “Dia De Los Muertos Workshop,” will be held from Oct. 13 through Oct. 16. The Art 480 (CRN 11050) and Graduate 580 class (CRN 11051) may be taken for one or two credit hours. No pre-requisites are required for the workshop. A lab fee of $10 will be assessed. The cost for tuition may be free to fulltime WNMU students who have already been billed 12 to 16 credit hours. Please check with the Office of Business Affairs before adding the course to see if you can take advantage at no additional cost. The workshop will begin on Friday, Oct. 13, with a slide show, video and potluck from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the weekend.
The final works of art or shrines for the exhibit will be debuted on Nov. 2 at the McCray Art Building Room 118. A three to five minute stand-up comedy performance by students will be held as part of the exhibit opening.
