NMNWSE Annual Meeting at Spirit Canyon Lodge
The New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering (NMNWSE) is
hosting their Annual Meeting at Spirit Canyon Lodge, Lake Roberts outside Silver City, New Mexico, October 27-28, 2006. The event features Technical Symposiums of projects and special interests of New Mexico women working in and/or interested in Engineering, Math, Science,
and Technology. Rosa Romero and Cassandra Bluett, two Western New Mexico University science students, will be presenting a talk:”The Importance of the Preservation of Native Wildlife in the Southwest”. In addition to the Technical talks, the meeting also provides professional development, networking opportunities, and the chance to meet other interesting women from across New Mexico. For registration information, tentative agenda, and location directions, please go to http://nmnwse.org/AM2006/.
On Saturday Oct. 28, Cynthia Ann Bettison, PhD, Director and Archaeologist, Western New Mexico University Museum, will be presenting an after dinner talk focusing on the Mimbres people, their culture, artifacts and environment.
The purpose of NMNWSE is to encourage the entry into and career development of women in science and engineering professions. Members of NMNWSE consist of women scientists, mathematicians, engineers, educators, managers, community leaders, and parents, most of whom live and work in New Mexico - several have received the Governor's Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women and similar honors for their outreach and professional contributions. Members in local chapters around the state are dedicated to encouraging young women to enter science-based fields and to providing supportive activities for women professionals in
non-traditional careers.
Each March, chapters sponsor Expanding Your Horizons (EYH), to provide career information to young women and their parents, teachers, and counselors. The emphasis of EYH conferences is communicating the excitement and challenge members experience in their work through
providing role models, "hands-on" activities, career workshops, panel discussions, and professionals who share their experiences and give practical advice. The 15th annual Silver City EYH conference to be held on the WNMU campus is scheduled for March 3, 2007.
NMNWSE publishes Careers: Exploring the Possibilities, which acquaints young women and their parents, advisors, and teachers with non-traditional career opportunities. It is available on-line at http://nmnwse.org/career.htm. NMNWSE members also regularly judge science fairs, awarding special awards to encourage young women to continue their interests in science, math, and engineering.
