SILVER CITY—Western New Mexico University alumnus J. Dean Reed, vice president of sales for Caris Diagnostics, a medical company in Texas, will be the keynote speaker for the WNMU 2006 winter commencement ceremony scheduled at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, at the WNMU Fine Arts Center Theatre.
Some 141 degrees will be conferred during Friday's ceremony including 36 associate, 71 baccalaureate, 28 master of arts, 15 master of arts in teaching, and one master of business administration degree.
Reed, 45, earned a bachelor of arts degree in business and psychology in 1983 and a master of business administration degree in 1984 from WNMU.
While at WNMU, Reed served as President of the Associated Students of WNMU in 1982 and 1983. He was employed through the Housing Department as the head resident assistant at the Eckles Hall dormitory, served as an ex-officio student member to the WNMU Board of Regents for two years, and was a member of the track team. Reed was also appointed by then Gov. Bruce King to the Legislative Finance Committee as a student representative. Reed may best be remembered as the “Voice of the Mustangs” for football, basketball, and baseball games broadcast locally on KNFT and KSIL in 1983 and 1984.
Reed was inducted into the ASWNMU Student Hall of Fame in 2001, was instrumental in establishing the WNMU Albuquerque Alumni Chapter, and is currently a member of the WNMU Texas Alumni Chapter.
Reed resides in Keller, Texas. He is the vice president of sales for Caris Diagnostics, a private medical pathology company that specializes in gastroenterology pathology nationwide. Caris Diagnostics is the largest GI specialized lab in the United States. The company was started seven years ago.
Prior to his affiliation with Caris Diagnostics, Reed has spent his entire career in medical sales and sales management. Companies he has worked for include Olympus Medical, Nellcor Medical, Pacific Pulmonary, and Vital Signs.
He also taught graduate level marketing and sales classes at the Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico for four years.
Reed serves actively at the Hillside Community Church located in Keller.
Reed and his wife, Vicki, have been married since 1990 and have four children Stephanie, Sam, Cody, and Tyler.
