SILVER CITY--Sherri Burr, Professor of Law at the University of New Mexico, will speak on “International Relations in a Post 9/11 World” at Western New Mexico University Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The lecture will be held at the Global Resource Center Auditorium. It is free and open to the public.

According to Dr.Burr, “International relations requires nations to negotiate, arbitrate, or deploy political, economic, cultural and diplomatic resources to resolve their disputes before relying on military means. But in a post-9/11 world, nations launch missiles first, ask question later.”  She uses classic military strategists to illustrate how an attack-first strategy destabilizes the world community.

Dr. Burr is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, Yale University, and Princeton University.  She teaches courses in international law at UNM and has written six books and numerous scholarly articles. An internationally renowned lecturer, Dr. Barr has spoken at universities in Barbados, Canada, Chile, France, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and South Africa.

She has served as president of the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association and as chair of the Art Law and International Law Sections of the Association of American Law Schools.  Dr. Burr’s appearance is sponsored by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the WNMU Millennium III Honors Program.
