AFTER SIX YEARS IN MIDEAST,

WNMU PROFESSOR TO SPEAK ON ARAB CULTURE

SILVER CITY - For six years, Western New Mexico University Biology Professor Jeffrey Hill lived and taught at the first all female college, Zayed University, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is now ready to share his experience with his American students, both male and female, when he lectures on the UAE and Arab Culture on Friday, April 11 at 12:00pm. Speaking at Harlan Hall, on the WNMU campus, Hill will be in full Arabic dress. Along with him will be a student volunteer who agreed to dress up in traditional clothing to help demonstrate what a typical female student at Hill’s former university would look like.

Zayed University, which was established in 1999, is considered a school programmed in the American university design. With mostly American professors doing the teaching, students learn to speak English in an intensive immersion program. English is considered the business language of the UAE.

Hill, who prior to teaching in the Middle East taught at universities in Florida and Georgia, says that audience members “will be surprised to learn what culture is like in the United Arab Emirates.” Dubai, located in the UAE, is considered the fastest growing city in the world.

Located in Silver City, New Mexico, Western New Mexico University has served the people of the state of New Mexico and its surrounding areas as a comprehensive, regional, rural, public coeducational university since 1893 and caters to a student body diverse in age, culture, language and ethnic background.
