WNMU KEYNOTE SPEAKER TO HAVE ROOM DEDICATED
SILVER CITY, N.M. – To be chosen as the Western New Mexico University Commencement Keynote speaker would be an honor alone, but this year’s pick will also get a room dedication.
“Wow is what I first thought,” said Christina Gonzales about the two recognitions bestowed upon her this year. Her room dedication is scheduled for Thursday, May 15 at 1:00pm, a day before she is slated to deliver the keynote speech for the Spring 2008 Commencement Ceremony.
Gonzales is a native of Grant County and a Western New Mexico University alumnus. Earning a BS degree in 1996, she served as the first elected female Student Government President and consequently also accomplished another unprecedented action as the first appointed Student Regent.
Gonzales, who now serves as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Arizona State University, feels “very honored” about the dedication. “I was there for the groundbreaking (of the Student Memorial Building),” she commented about the building in which the Student Senate Chamber room is located.
Since her WNMU graduation, Gonzales has earned an MA degree from New Mexico State University and has been involved with various educational boards and committees including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), which she co-chaired, and the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA).
Her other recognitions include the 2004 nomination for ASU’s Outstanding Commitment to Students Award, and the 2005 ASU Erin S. Murphy Intergroup Relations Service Award.
Graduation on the main campus of WNMU will begin at 6:00pm on Friday, May 16 at Old James Stadium.
Located in Silver City, New Mexico, Western New Mexico University has served the people of the state of New Mexico and its surrounding areas as a comprehensive, regional, rural, public coeducational university since 1893 and caters to a student body diverse in age, culture, language and ethnic background.
