Celebrating WNMU Writers

SILVER CITY--This February 8, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the J. Cloyd Miller Library, Western New Mexico University faculty and staff will celebrate "Writing at Western" with some short readings by faculty and staff. The public is invited, and refreshments will follow the readings. Faculty from a range of disciplines will read briefly from their work. A new, updated bibliography of the published work of WNMU writers will also be presented.

One of the event's organizers, Sharman Apt Russell, said that this "chorus of voices" will include work from Dr. Liza Kuecker, from WNMU's Social Sciences department, Dr. John Lavalle from History, Dr. Maria Trillo and Rick Stansberger from the Humanities, Dr. William Charland from the Honors Program, Dr. Barbara Taylor from the School of Education, and Dr. Felipe de Ortego y Gasca, Western's scholar-in-residence.

Russell said, "Writing is a part of almost all professions. The faculty at Western does some wonderful research, and we want to give them some deserved recognition. We also want our students to see how and why people write."

"Celebrating Writing at WNMU" is co-hosted by Miller Library and the Writing Across the Curriculum program. The philosophy of Writing Across the Curriculum is that writing is an important tool for learning, as well as communicating, and must be encouraged throughout a student's career at a university.
