IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3-11-04 CONTACT: PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE SILVER CITY--Western New Mexico University's Multicultural Affairs and Student Activities office will pay tribute to the many contributions that women have made throughout history during Women's History Month activities March 13 - March 31. On Saturday, March 13, Restoration-Preservation Days will be held at the Fort Bayard Theatre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Monday, March 15, a video titled "One Woman, One Vote," a moving and entertaining film about the women who pushed for the right to vote, will be shown in the Student Memorial Building meeting room from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. On Tuesday, March 16, a "Female Student Issues," discussion will be held in the SMB meeting room from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Female students will discuss issues they encounter on a day to day basis. On Wednesday, March 17, a presentation titled "Jeannette Rankin," the first U.S. female senator from Montana, will be given by WNMU Professor Cecilia Bell in the SMB meeting room from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 18, the videos titled "Women in American Life 1861-1880," focusing on the civil war, recovery, and westward expansion; and "Women in American Life 1880-1920," regarding immigration, work, and new roles, will be shown in the SMB meeting room from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 19, "Adelante Mujeres," a powerful and affirming documentary of the history of Mexican American/Chicana women, will be offered at the SMB meeting room 9 - 9:30 a.m. On Tuesday, March 30, "A Room of Women's Work," an exhibit of crafts, art, poetry, books, recipes, etc. will be displayed in the SMB Meeting room from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students, staff, faculty, and community are encouraged to participate. Anyone interested in displaying items or selling items during the event are encouraged to participate. On Wednesday, March 31, the videos titled "Women in American Life 1917 - 1942," focusing on cultural image and economic reality; "Women in American Life 1942 - 1955," regarding war, work, housework, and growing discontent; and "Women in American Life 1955- 1977," about new attitudes forcing dramatic changes, will be shown in the SMB meeting room from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Activities will be awarding prizes in recognition of Women's History Month. "We are seeking nominations for the eldest living woman in Grant County. Nominations will be taken through March 31," said Maria Dominguez-Rolfe, MASA director. "We can all learn so much from the elderly and the knowledge they have to share. This is why we chose to honor one of the many unsung heroes in the community."
