AdvisingThe Office of First Year Experience (FYE) advises all new undergraduate students at WNMU and all undeclared sophomores. At the FYE, we strongly encourage students to meet with their advisors several times each semester. While it is required to meet with your advisor when registering for classes, it is equally important to meet with your advisor concerning your academic progress and goals throughout your academic career.
One-Stop RegistrationThe FYE office offers “One-Stop Registration” for all first year and undeclared students. When you come to meet with your advisor to discuss your schedule for the next semester, your advisor in the FYE will register you for those classes on the spot.
New Student OrientationThe Office of the First Year Experience oversees the New Student Orientation at WNMU. This program continues throughout the student’s first year and includes a variety of activities hosted in collaboration with the Outdoor Program, Residence Life, C-Rec, Student Activities, Alumni Affairs and other offices on campus. For more information on the New Student Orientation program, please contact our office at 575.538.6400.
Tutoring/Success CoachingFYE provides access to a tutor/success coach to students who are struggling with their classes. These individuals are available to discuss issues and approaches related to academic success, and to teach and reinforce good study skills, time management, and lifestyle choices. Our tutors/success coaches are WNMU students who maintain certain academic qualifications. They are trained by and work with our professional staff, and their hours are posted in the FYE office for your convenience.
TestingWe offer students and the community the convenience of taking specific tests in our facility. The COMPASS test is administered upon request between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:30 pm. We are also a testing site for CLEP, GED, SAT, ACT, PRAXIS, and more.
Counseling ReferralsWe believe in supporting our students’ academic and personal growth. If they are having difficulty with their academic or personal life, our advisors can help them assess concerns and make referrals to the WNMU counselor, or to outside providers when appropriate.
Academic AlertThe Academic Alert Program helps to identify students who have encountered an academic barrier. Throughout each semester, professors may identify students who are struggling due to circumstances such as poor performance on quizzes and tests, or poor class attendance. The FYE staff then contacts those students in an effort to support them toward successful completion of their academic work. This program is tailored to each student’s unique situation.
