Student Senate Minutes

November 17, 2004

I.          Call to order

            Meeting was called to order at 8:36 p.m. by Pro Tempore Rutherford.

II.            Opening ceremonies

            Pledge of Allegiance was led by Pro Tempore Rutherford.

III.       Roll call

A.            Senate Present:  Pro Tempore  Rutherford, Floor Leader Frost, Senate Secretary Medeguari , Senator Ainsworth, Senator Bass, Senator Vargas, Senator Murillo, Senator Rojas, Senator Burdette, Senator Murray, Senator Rodriguez, Senator Wog, Senator Kaaiakamanu, and Senator Wilson. 

IV.       Pro Tempore Rutherford appointed Senator Kaaiakamanu as Sergeant at Arms.

V.            Approval of Agenda

Vice President Boyles entertained a motion to approve the agenda for November 17, 2004.  Senator Ainsworth moved to amend the agenda for November 17, 2004.  He moved to have line item IX C. Removed from the agenda.  Senator Burdette seconded the motion.  Motion passes 11 to 2.

Vice President Boyles entertained a motion to approve the agenda as amended.  Senator Burdette moved to amend line item IX B. ii. in order to change the spelling of SAMS Club to SAM Club.  Senator Bass seconded the motion.  Motion passed 12 to 1.  Senator Bass moved to approve the agenda as amended.  Senator Ainsworth seconded.  Motion passed 13 to 1.

VI.       A.            Approval of Minutes of November 10, 2004

Senator Murray moved to table the minutes for November 10, 2004.   Senator Rojas seconded.  Motion passed 11 to 1 to 1.

VII.            Committee Reports

A.                Senator Rojas reported on behalf of the Activities Committee.  Her committee has set the theme for Great Race as “The Wild, Wild, West”.  Senator Rojas also announced an activities meeting for November 29, 2004 in the Senate Chambers at seven p.m. 

B.                 Senator Vargas attended the Honors committee meeting in which classes offered in Fall and Spring where the topics along with the change in Honors brochure.

C.                Pro Tempore Rutherford said that the public service committee had set a date for Casino Night for December 2, 2004 beginning at eight p.m.  The committee is also working on Thanksgiving dinners that will be donated.  Secretary Doll asked Pro Tempore Rutherford if the dinners would go towards WNMU students.   Pro Tempore Rutherford said the dinners were for families of WNMU students.

D.                Floor Leader Frost announced that at the last Appeals committee meeting two issues brought forth to the committee has already been addressed. 

E.                 Senator Vargas mentioned that the Lobbing and Grants committee talked about lobbying towards the art and science departments. 

VIII.     Old Business

A.  Treasurer Carbajal reported that there were no changes in the budget. However, at the next Student Senate meeting, the budget will have changes.

IX.       New Business

A.  Ms.  Donna Res, who is a dean for the extended campus, explained the need for the Virtual Campus.  She mentioned that some students of WNMU do not attend Silver City’s main campus, but the virtual campus would allow more students to enroll in Deming, Truth or Consequence, and Gallup.  She also expressed to the Student Senate that these ideas have not been set in stone and she would appreciate any student input.

The Budget for the Virtual Campus is as follows:

100-200 level classes                          $50 per credit hour

300-400 level classes                          $75 per credit hour

Graduate courses                         $100 per credit hour

Campus fees would not be charged.

 Fees would be kept in a lone budget used for technology fees, faculty training, online student services, and debt.

Pro Tempore Rutherford asked Ms. Res if online classes would also be offered in an actual class. 

Ms. Res explained that as far as she knows, classes offered online are also available in a classroom.

B.  Legislation

i. Pro Tempore Rutherford moved to approve Senate Bill 25, matching funds for SEP.  Senator Vargas seconded.  Motion passed unanimously.

ii. Senator Ainsworth moved to approve Senate Bill 26 for matching funds for SAM club.  Senator Bass seconded.  Motion passed 9 to 1 to 3.

iii. Senator Murray moved to approve Senate Bill 27 for the matching of funds for Psychology Club for.  Pro Tempore Rutherford seconded.  Motion passed 12 to 1.

X.            Announcements

Senate Secretary Medeguari would like to apologize for not having reported announcements for this meeting.  She will take full responsibility for not documenting this portion correctly.

XI.              Adjournment

Senator Ainsworth moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 p.m.  Senator Vargas seconded.  Motion passed unanimously.
