ASWNMU SENATE MEETING
(Recording of Meeting Tape 9A)
February 20, 2001
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Vice President Denton at
7:10 a.m.
II. Pledge of Allegiance
III. Roll Call
Senator Amavizca, Castillo, Crosley, Gomez, Guevara, Kenny,
Klell, Magnusson, Preston, Scott and Talimatasi were present
for the Senate. Senator Romano and Rutherford were late. Senator
Urquijo was absent with a proxy.
IV. Approval of Agenda
Vice President Denton added C. Sam Club allocation and D.
Social Work Club allocation under New Business. Senator Castillo
moved to accept the agenda. Senator Guevara seconded. Motion
carried 11-0.
V. Approval of the Minutes
Senator Gomez moved to accept the minutes of February 6, 2001.
Senator Crosley seconded. Motion carried 11-0.
VI. Executive Council Reports
A. President Murguia was absent.
B. Vice President Denton Vice President Denton informed the
Senate that the trip to Santa Fe went well and that she looks
forward to working with the representative from Fort Bayard
again. She also informed the Senators that although she has
made a new proxy form, it will probably get voided when standing
rule #3 and #4 pass. This concluded her report.
C. Secretary Zuniga Secretary Zuniga expressed the success
of the trip to Santa Fe. She asked the Senators to come and
see her if they had any questions regarding the events of
the trip. She also asked the Senators to speak to club representatives
about possible activities for the Great Race. Secretary Zuniga
talked about the events taking place in her committees. She
informed the Senate about the Retention Committee. This committee
was formed to help student find ways to remain in school.
The Advisory Task Force is a committee established to advise
students about the choices that they have in their education.
Anyone who has any questions or comments on these committees
should go and see her. Finally, Secretary Zuniga informed
the Senate that Great Race and Spring Fest activities were
being planned. Those with ideas are encouraged to speak with
her about their suggestions. This concluded her report.
D. Treasurer Bocanegra Treasurer Bocanegra informed the Senate
that the current budget is $8,029.79. Money out of the lobbying
budget was used to pay for expenses from the Santa Fe trip.
He informed the Senate that the only major expense left this
semester was Spring Fest. Finally, Treasurer Bocanegra informed
the Senate that the Cafeteria Evaluation Committee meeting
which was scheduled for Thursday Feb 15 was cancelled. He
asked those in the committee to meet with him to set up a
new meeting time. This concluded his report
D. Attorney General Hazlett Attorney General Hazlett informed
the Senate that Standing Rule #9 has been revised. He pointed
out that Senator hours will increase only 60% or 6 hours in
the upcoming years. This concluded his report.
E. Governmental Affairs Director Luna Governmental Affairs
Director Luna informed the Senate that $75,000 for Special
Needs was requested at the Santa Fe lobbying session. He expressed
his interest in asking Senators Romano and Rutherford to Santa
Fe to represent the football team. Governmental Affairs Director
Luna felt that this money should go towards completing the
new football field. This concluded his report.
VII. Old Business
A. Standing Rule #2 Pro-Tempore Preston moved to approve standing
rule #2. Senator Crosley seconded. Motion carries.14-0.
B. Standing Rule #9 Pro-Tempore Preston moved to approve standing
rule #9. Senator Castillo seconded. Motion carried. 14-0.
VIII. New Business
A. Mr. Rippa Mr. Rippa is in charge of designing the coarse
for the Great race. He asked anyone having suggestions for
the Great race to go and speak with him. He needs at least
one representative from the Senate. His extension is 6611.
B. Publicity Funds - Secretary Zuniga Secretary Zuniga asked
for an allocation of $150.00. This money will be used to make
an ASWNMU newsletter that could be inserted into The Mustang
or posted around campus. Attorney General Hazlett felt that
this newsletter could also help to advertise the ASWNMU web
site. Senator Castillo asked how often the newsletter would
be published. Secretary Zuniga expressed that she would like
to have a newsletter out once a week. She expressed that this
newsletter would also help in getting feedback from students.
Senator Preston moved to allocate $150.00 to Sharon Zuniga
for the ASWNMU newsletter. Senator Castillo seconded. Motion
carried. 13-0.
C. Sam Club Allocation A Sam Club representative was present
to ask the Senate for matching funds for a fund raiser held
in December. The total was $134.25. Senator Gomez moved to
allocate $134.25 to the Sam Club. Senator Romano seconded.
Motion carried. 13-0.
D. Social Work Club Allocation A representative from the Social
Work Club was present to asked the Senate for an allocation
of $360.00 to use towards a trip to Santa Fe for lobbying.
Senator Castillo moved to allocate $360.00 to the Social Work
Club. Senator Magnusson seconded. Motion carried 13-0.
IX. Announcements
Maria Rolfe was present to inform the Senate that February
was Black History month and that various activities were planned
throughout campus. A schedule of activities could be found
posted around campus. She asked the Senators to inform other
students of the activities and asked for any input. Those
with ideas or suggestion should see her in Academic Affairs
after 4:00. Vice President Denton informed the Senate that
the next meeting will be held March 6, 2001 at 7:00 a.m.
X. Adjournment
Senator Talimatasi moved to adjourn at 7:37 a.m. Seconded
by Senator Romano. Motion carried 13-0.
